The Assembly Hall & Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh (1996)
The Assembly Hall & Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh (1996)
The Assembly Hall was built for the Free Church of Scotland. The Free Church was a result of the Great Disruption of 1843 - when many Ministers of the Church of Scotland simply walked out of that year's General Assembly and set up a new church. Some parts of Scotland saw 80% of their Ministers join the Free Church. In 1900 the Free Church of Scotland and the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland united to form the United Free Church of Scotland. Some congregations of the Free Church (often now called the Wee Frees) stayed outwith the 1900 union and the Wee Frees remain as a much reduced Church. There has been a further falling out in the last few years within the remaining Free Church in that there is now the 'Free Church of Scotland' and the 'Free Church of Scotland (Continuing)'. I do not know what the cause of the most recent split is about. In 1929 the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland reunited. Some congregations of the United Free Church of Scotland refused to rejoin the Church of Scotland and a reduced United Free Church still exists outwith the 1929 reunion. For a short while after the 1929 reunion the United Free Church of Scotland called itself - the United Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) and the enlarged Church of Scotland called itself the United Church of Scotland. Both Churches have long since gone back to their pre-1929 names. This Assembly Hall has been used since 1929 as the home of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. From 1999 to 2004 the Assembly Hall was also used as the first meeting place of the Scottish Parliament.
