With no distractions the adrenalized pulse of thought and fear takes over; heavy eyes open to a blank canvas, a canvas that becomes filled with permutations of failure. It takes only a few nights of this before closing your eyes, flicking the light switch becomes an act of nerves; a preparation not for sleep but for a lonely midnight trial. Once the pattern is set, the weight shedding, the sleep disrupted, it doesn’t take long for every act to be defined by fear. The simple deeds of a day become laced with nerves. The more complex moments of an adult life are almost unthinkable, defined not by purpose and deed but by an almost overwhelming desire to flee. But flee to where? No matter how fast, no matter how far, you cannot outstrip that what lives within you. And for me, well what can you do? You can advise, you can nurture, you can share your belief in that person’s ability, but you cannot walk every step of the way. You can be there, you can believe that it will be fine, you can hold or harry when effort is required, you can be patient. But that is all you can do. All you can do is know that you are there but you are a blur. All you can do is know that your words are fleeting, your advice ill-formed. All you can do is know that you are lost in the glare of anxiety and fear. All you can do is hope that you are can block out that glare and stand strong for as long as is needed.

Hormones. Lately I've been blaming them for everthing. The weather, traffic jams, returned mail. It just seems to me that everything is affected by them. OK, not everything. But I am. At the risk of seeming indelicate, I'm headed into menopause. I only bring it up now because it is robbing me of "me". And it's scary, and frustrating. And for those of you who don't think that women, or men for that matter, are truly affected by the chemicals in their bodies, frankly, I have no time for you. There's enough information out there that you should know better. I thought I was getting Alzheimer's. That's not funny. I began, rather unconsciously, forgetting things. Not normal for someone who remembers everything. Like conversations with my husband. I can't tell you how many fights we've had because "we talked about this" and I have no recollection. Or I would replace words with similar-sounding words, like wanting to say "gift" and saying "thrift". I tried to hang up a bar of soap where I hang my washcloth in the shower. I would enter a room and forget what I wanted. OK - we all do that. But I had no recollection of events leading me to that point - no way to re-trace my steps. Like leaving a trail of bread crumbs.... I have insomnia. I used to sleep at least 7-8 hours a night. Now I'm lucky if I get a solid 5 or 6. Tears are never far away - and for no apparent reason. I just become enveloped in a blanket of sadness. And I'm short-tempered. I have little or no fuse and blow up at those closest to me. Yes, there is a lot of stress in my life - particularly where my parents are concerned. I feel overly responsible for them. I want them to be happy and healthy, but came to the realization today (der) that there's only so much I can do. I can't make either of them happy. I can't make their lives work for them. I can support and encourage, and help as much as possible, but ultimately it's a weight that they must bear, not I. Low-dose hormone replacement is beginning to help. I'm remembering some things, and am a little more focused. But it's still a challenge. I'm trying to find humor in this, and grace. Humor I get from my husband - when he has a "sympathy menopause" moment. Or from my girlfriends when we compare notes and laugh at how silly we feel or have acted. Grace, I get and need from God. This is one of those situations where I'm so busy looking at everything going on around me, and in me, that I forget to look to Him. I'm too tired to pray. Too frustrated to read. Too self-protected to let go and let Him touch me. The feeling of being lost is so overwhelming at times. But it's times like these that I remember His deep and abiding love for me, His goodness to me, and His faithfulness to me. And I have hope.
