Dropbox is a cross-platform program (Mac, Windows, Linux) that allows the user to store files and have them accessible at any computer, anywhere in the world. They are secure and access is limited to whomever the owner chooses.

The tool is great for creating online hand-in folders and for storing files that are a work in progress or collaborative group work. Like many services, the basic use is free but more advanced features are available for a cost.

The service is also available on hand-held devices like Iphones, Ipod Touches, and Blackberries. You can access and view files and information on the go.

File Sync

Dropbox allows you to sync your files online and across your computers automatically.

  • Work on files in your Dropbox even if you're offline. Your changes sync once your computer has an Internet connection again.
  • Dropbox transfers correctly resume where they left off if your connection drops.
  • Efficient sync: only the pieces of a file that changed (not the whole file) are synced. This saves you time.
  • Doesn't hog your internet connection. You can manually set bandwidth limits.

File Sharing

Sharing files is simple. It takes only a few clicks.

  • Shared folders allow several people to collaborate on the same files.
  • See other people's changes instantly.
  • Use your "Public" folder to link directly to files.
  • Control who has access to your shared folders. Kick people out and remove the shared files from their computers in the process.
  • Automatically create shareable online photo galleries out of regular folders.
