Haunted House in Berkeley Square.
Haunted House in Berkeley Square.
Nowadays, number 50 Berkeley Square, Mayfair, is an address housing an antiquarian bookseller in a VERY utter part of the west-end of London. It's blue plaque on the wall announced that it was the residence of a famous statesman in the early 19th century. But, later that century, it became THE most haunted house in London and a place that Victorians included in their "must see" tours of the capital. There are numerous tales associated with the multiple hauntings of number 50 but the most famous concerns two fog-bound sailors who gained access to the house which stood empty at the time. They had hoped that it would provide a free night of lodging...instead it cost one of them their lives! During their night of illicit occupancy they heard sounds of someone mounting the stairs. Something undescribable entered the room they were staying in and one of the sailors jumped from the upper floor window to his doom. During the 1870's neighbours heard unaccountable sounds from the property. A visitor offered to spend the night in the haunted room on condition that help should be forthcoming should he ring for assistance. He did and the other occupants of the house rushed to his aid....and found him dead! The top floor houses the room of doom!

The fifty-room mansion is Little & Browne's finest architectural achievement. The original property also included a walled garden, tennis courts, and a three-story stable and carriage house. The eclectic interiors of Anderson House dominated by English and Italian influences feature the painstaking work The ballroom offers an inlaid oak floor, Verona marble columns, and a flying staircase with an intricate wrought iron balustrade. of craftsman who adorned the house with carved wood walls, gilded papier-mache ceilings, ornate iron staircases, and intricate marble floors.
