Fashion Fabrics: 1960s (Schiffer Design Book)
Fabrics can represent an era or a decade-the colors, patterns, textures, and fibers reveal as much about the culture as do the furnishings and clothing that relied on the fabrics. The decade of the 1960s was one of extremes. Traditional plaids were reintroduced and became popular at the same time as bold prints and geometrics, notably Op Art and "psychedelic" patterns and colors, characterized the decade. Synthetics took off, and phrases like "polyester knit" and "stretch knit" elicit visions of unmistakably '60s staples. The best way to experience the fabric of a decade is to see it, and this book is entirely dedicated to the sensory, the visual. Nearly 600 close-up color photographs with informative captions and index make this book a treat for designers, historians, and anyone interested in fashion and textiles.

Memorial Day 1970
Memorial Day 1970
This is one image from a strip taken in one of those old fashioned black and white photo booths one can still see in game arcades and other tourist places. The date is May 24, 1970, which makes it Sunday on Memorial Day weekend.

The people in the photograph are Antoinette Lusuriello, age 7, Susan Lusuriello, age 14, Andy Di Justo, age 4, Sarah Lusuriello, age 5, Patrick Di Justo, age 6.

All of us, except Susan, are wearing sailor hats with our names, or diminutives, embroidered on them. ("We probably paid for the embroidery by the letter. Mine only says 'Ann'", one participant says today.) I can close my eyes and remember the woman at the souvenir stand placing the hat into this enormous contraption, asking our names, and -- faster than it takes to think about it -- writing our names one by one in a fancy script, using thick yellow thread. I cannot, however, for the life of me remember where this was. Sailor hats imply water, so we might have been at Lake George, but I doubt it; Memorial Day weekend was too early to go there.

In two of the frames, Andy (in the center) is seen holding a half eaten big salty pretzel. That pretty much limits this picture to the Northeastern US. Could we have gone to Coney Island that day? Andy and I are wearing baseball warm-up jackets, and Susan is wearing a windbreaker of some sort, so it probably wasn't warm enough to go swimming. Unless we had already been swimming and were bundled up as we dried. Freedomland Amusement Park, in what is now Co-Op City, closed in 1967. We might have been at Palisades Park, or Rye Playland.

I have no idea where Nicholas Lusuriello was when this picture strip was being taken.

Vintage Hats & Bonnets: Collectors ID & Value Guide 1770-1970
For centuries the hat has reflected the mood of its wearer and the spirit of its time. Hats are the crowning glory, the pinnacle, the grand finale of an outfit. Through history, when times were good, a joyous hat was a triumphant banner - when times were desperate, a brave hat could raise spirits. Vintage Hats & Bonnets is a time machine that follows the evolution of fashion from 1770 to 1970. The chapters are organized by decades and each has an historical overview, fashion overview, and hat descriptions, including information on materials, milliners, and designers of the day. Plus there's information on care, repair, and proper storage of hats. Just a few of the famous designers portrayed are Fortuny, Pengat, Patou, Olanvin, Paquin, Lelong, Schiaperelli, and Mary McFadden. 2004 values. REVIEW: This book, published in 1998, has been well received by vintage clothing collectors. Presented in a unique way, the book chronicles the history of hats and bonnets, accompanied by vintage photographs of women wearing the items. A must-have for collectors of vintage hats and clothing.
