The British fashion house reported profits of ?269 million for the year to the end of March, up 40 percent from last year. Emerging markets such as China, Brazil and India accounted for 16 percent of retail and wholesale revenue in the year, up from 11 percent of last year’s total. Burberry opened 26 new stores last year, focusing on “high potential” markets such as India and Mexico. The company is now planning a 12-13 percent increase in its average retail selling space for the next year, undertaking a new joint venture in the Middle East with fashion retail franchisers Fawaz Abdulaziz Alhokair. Outerwear sales for the brand rose by 30 percent, making up more than half of all clothing sales. Accessories also saw a strong increase in demand , rising by 35 percent. The results come as creative director Christopher Bailey celebrates ten years at the label he has steadily turned around since 2001.
