"Visualize Whirled Peas"
Ready to go on the first day of the two day kinetic sculpture race in Corvallis KSR, 2010. VWP is made from 97% (by weight) post-consumer scrap, including the discarded dirt track race car tires/wheels. The only stuff I bought new were two $13.50 bearings and the nuts and bolts and the paint (which was on the shelf of returned or improperly mixed paint at the hardware store). The white buckets are paddlewheels for the water leg; they bolt inside the wheels. The front floats are styrofoam from a dumpster sandwiched between scrap plywood. The pea whirler uses a bicycle headset and tv/radio antenna pole. The main frame is a hospital bed frame from the metal recycling bin at Davis Waste Removal. There are a lot of bicycle components, generally from discarded "department store" bikes (which are basically a pollutant in my town). The front seat is for my son (seated here), and it's crankset powers the "pea whirler" via a twisted chain drive. My son is prohibited from powering or steering the machine in most of the races due to overly paranoid and inflexible insurance companies. (Which is really dumb, because they could at least allow children to pedal the machine, as it would make no difference in safety from just having them on the machine, which *is* allowed.)
Eight-pound wheel bearings, found in the woods near where the wreck of the No. 47 occurred. These wheel bearings were later forbidden because they were too light. Todd's glasses are there for size comparison.
