Rebel XSi + EF 85mm f/1.8 USM ISO: 100 Aperture: f/8 Shutter: 1/125 I tried to capture the motion of this shot by following the car with full-time AF around the track with a slower shutter at 1/125. This is the steadiest shot I got of this car and I tried to get a shot of it up on three wheels (if you look closely, it looks like the left-rear is up, but the shadows blend a bit). The car in the lower left is one of the Lotuses parked waiting for the next passenger (unintended inclusion in the frame). I'm pleased with the panning blur in the background and the yellow streaks from the dandelions, but I just wish my tracking of the car was better. This past week, Skip Barber Racing School hosted an Opening Day event at Lime Rock Park race track in Connecticut. The event was a promotion for Skip Barber's driver training programs and they hosted a series of activities for all attendees in which to participate. Events included the following: The M3 was slower than the other cars available, but that V8 sounded great. 1) Skip Barber instructor-driven hot laps around Lime Rock Park race track in Mazda MX-5 Cup Cars (last year's event featured stock MX-5's and a Lotus Exige) 2) Auto-cross hot laps in Skip Barber's High Performance Driving School cars (a selection of a BMW M3, 2 Lotus Exiges, or a Porsche 911 Carrera S) 3) Skidpad recovery training in a Mazda RX-8 4) Driving Mazda3's around an alternate autocross course (last year had an MX-5 to drive as well)
A Road in Waipio Valley
A Road in Waipio Valley
This was the best adventure on the trip: We'd planned to go down to the bottom of Waipio Valley on either a van or wagon tour. We called, but they were all full. So we went to the lookout point and decided to maybe try hike down. One moment we were walking down the hill, and the next minute we were holding on for dear life in the back of a really, really old school truck. A really nice guy and his family stopped and asked if we wanted a ride down the hill (or more likely, took pity on us - we were the only crazy ones walking down). It turned out he was going to trim an ulu (breadfruit) tree on a private taro farm way inside the Waipio valley, where no tours are allowed, and he asked if we wanted to take a detour and join him for a few hours! It was pretty amazing, I don't think too many tourists get that kind of chance. This is nearing the house where the guy had to do the tree trimming. This is looking backward into the valley, an amazing view - all of this was private land, much of it taro or vegetable farms. My dad, of course, tried to help out with the tree cutting and stuff. He's from Hawaii so they got along pretty well. The house had access to part of the river coming down - since it was a Saturday, a whole mess of people went swimming. But we didn't bring our suits =)
