  • The Claddagh ring (fainne Chladaigh) is a traditional Irish ring given as a token of love or worn as a wedding ring. The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside the city of Galway.
  • First crafted by Master Goldsmith Richard Joyce in 1689, it is named after Claddagh, the fishing village he lived in at the time, which overlooks Galway Bay.

Irish Friendship & Love Claddagh Band Ring in Sterling Silver, Size 7, #2601
Irish Friendship & Love Claddagh Band Ring in Sterling Silver, Size 7, #2601
WITH THESE HANDS I GIVE YOU MY HEART AND I CROWN IT WITH MY LOVE. People wear the claddagh ring all over the world as a symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship. When it is worn on the right hand, with crown and heart facing out, the ring tells that the wearerOs heart has yet to be won. While in a relationship it is worn with heart and crown facing inwards. Wearing the ring on the left hand, with the crown and heart facing out, signifies that your heart has been won. The hands are there for friendship, the heart is there for love. For loyalty throughout the year, the crown is raised above. This ring has a width of 3/8" at its widest point and is a size 7. See pulldown menu for available sizes in stock. Crafted in sterling silver. Don't forget to check out our Taos Trading Storefront for a great selection of jewelry designs and styles.

I bought two rings during my visit to Ireland because I don't usually wear any and... I felt like it, heh. The twisty silver band is on my left hand; the claddagh ring is on my right. I'm not a huge fan of green stones and nearly bought this in purple, but I really liked the shade so went with this one. The twisty silver one doesn't stand for anything in particular, but the claddagh ring stands for love (the heart), friendship (the hands) and loyalty (the crown). Technically the way you wear it describes your romantic availability, although i doubt many people outside of Ireland would actually notice, know, or care! I wear mine on my right hand with the heart pointing outward to signify that no one loves me :P If my friend, Soo, were the one wearing it, she would also wear it on her right hand but with the heart pointing inwards, to signify that she's in a relationship. If my cousin were wearing it, she would wear it on her left hand, with the heart pointing outwards to signify that she's engaged. After her wedding in May, she would wear it on her left hand with the heart pointing inwards to signify that she's married. Both rings are pretty and I thought I'd better take a picture of them before I lose one... which I will undoubtedly do, eventually!
