I made my own dress...by hand, too, since I ruined everything I put anywhere near the sewing machine and broke the thing at least once too. In the end it probably wasn't less expensive than buying one, considering all the materials, but it was more satisfying than shopping endlessly through dresses that probably wouldn't have fit or weren't my style (apparently, free-spirited quasi-hippie/goth at the time). Everyone said I looked Puerto Rican, which is kind of funny because my hair and makeup actually WERE done by Puerto Rican stylists (left side = makeup artist Jennifer, daughter of right side = hairstylist Betsy).
I have been wanting to find and upload this old photo for the longest! This is Alma, circa 2001 or so. She and Lily showed up at the back door of my apartment wearing prom dresses they had made out of runners' blankets from the Chicago Marathon. The results speak for themselves. This was saved as ihavefriends.jpg on my old computer.
