Just when I was getting tired of Flickr, Abe comes along with the 52 Weeks of Feeling Fit group. And at the right time, as I've been exercising and cutting back on the food for the past two months. I was a skinny 150 pounds throughout high school and part of college and then the weight came on. Which when your 6'4" 150 pounds is like a beanpole. So I get up to around 200 which was fine, but after law school I ballooned up to 240. My face started looking fat and I was wearing 42 in the waist. Not to mention I was uncomfortable as hell. Obesity runs in my family. My mom, brother and two sisters are all significantly overweight. I was fortunate enough that my weight was located mostly in my waist area instead of all over like them. So two years ago I got down to 205 and stayed there for a minute. I ended up gaining it all back and getting up to 242 a few months ago. So I told myself enough of this. It's time to get this shit off and keep it off. No more fattening food, no more excessive sugar, no more refined flour, etc. Beans, tuna, brown rice, grits, beans, more tuna, yogurt, chicken, wheat bread, etc., with the occasional day of some hamburger meat, a few cookies, a dab of butter (but all in moderation). Oh, and water. Water is the key. As of this morning I'm down to 217.8. 12.8 pounds to go until I'm at 205. Already gone are the size 42 jeans. Down to 38 in those now, and they are already getting loose. The stomach fat is slowly ebbing away. Running, sit ups, and push ups seem to be making a big difference. The thing is, this is something I'm going to have to do from now on out. Keeping track of what I eat, calories, carbs, fat, protein percentages, etc. But it's worth it. I already feel better being 25 pounds lighter. Once I'm down to 205 I'm going to set a few goals. First, I can't run for shit. But I still go and do it when I can. I'm slow, my legs hurt, but I like it. I wanna do a 5K by next April and have a decent time. 3.1 miles isn't that far, but it's a first step. Second, once that fat is gone I need to start building muscle. Not sure if I'm going to join a gym or what. But I need some weight training. Lastly, let me say this. Do you ever read food labels? What is all this crap we put in our bodies? Is anything really "food" anymore? Looking at the back of the instant cheese grits I eat in the morning shows 26 ingredients for something that's supposed to be made out of corn. Certainly something to think about.
