About Hollywood Racks
Hollywood Racks started in 1973 when it began making trunk racks in the back of its bike shop in Hollywood, California. As a retailer, it knew exactly what people needed: good quality products that were easy to use. Hollywood Racks earned a great reputation fast and began selling its racks to other dealers, and later to the bike companies. Today, the people at Hollywood Racks still build racks the only way they know how--simple, strong, and secure, and they are proud to maintain their reputation of having the toughest racks in the business.
Hollywood Racks are built with top-quality materials such as high-strength steel and aluminum, aircraft quality fasteners, and thick powder coats to withstand the elements. Generous amounts of padding protect bikes and cars, and all of the company's products are fully covered with a limited lifetime warranty.
The company's products continue to receive accolades from all the major outdoor sports magazines, and are in demand by everyone from recreational cycling families to weekend warriors to race teams on the road and off. From its proven Original to its new "bolt-on" spare-tire rack and heavy-duty commercial parking systems, Hollywood Racks makes the strongest, safest, and easiest-to-use systems for bringing your bikes along whenever you go.
CANNONDALE R500 -Triple, 1999
My most modern bike. I purchased it new after I had re-entered the world of daily cycling. And I had chosen this model because I suspected I could use the aid of the smaller chainring of the triple crankset to supplement my long out of shape muscles. I rode it with considerable back and neck discomfort during the first year but since then it has been seldom used. I have tried numerous "fixes" to try to accommodate it better to my body, but none have helped much. As seen here it is close to the original set-up. I have added the nylon bottle cages and the water bottles, mounted the rear rack to make it at least somewhat useful, and I replaced the original pencil-necked front loading CODA quill stem with a stem adapter and threadless style stem (with Carbon fiber spacers added to raise it a bit) simply because it looks much better with the inflated oversized tubing, while the overall height is increased little. Otherwise I have changed only the original square-tapered bottom bracket (for a better model) and in the course of some 3,000 miles now on the bike, I have changed the chain and tires regularly. It has a complete Shimano "RSX" STI gruppo which was somewhere between the Tiagra and the 105 models. Actually, quite nice components and (as I had hoped) very durable ones, slightly heavier than a 105 set. The frame is aluminum with a carbon fiber fork. Seat tube measures 54 cm (c-c), 56cm by Cannondales terminology, and with the seat tube top at 58.7 cm. Top tube is 55.5 cm (c-c) - but feels like 60 cm. to me. As you can see, the bike has the standard modern pseudo-racer geometry with a short wheel base and tight wheel clearances. For my odd body the saddle seems too high, the handlebar too low and too wide and with too deep a drop, and the top tube seems far too long. Perhaps this would be a prime candidate for a flat bar - which would be about the only thing I have not yet tried on this bike. The only alternative would be to raise the stem another 3 to 4 inches to achieve a more familiar position, but the bike would then look absurd. For now, this one just sits in the shadows... where it will likely stay until I eventually sell it, if I find someone whose needs it may better satisfy. What was I thinking? Shame, shame.
