The pinacle of feature-loaded low-end bikes
I see a lot of low-end bikes. I'm not trying to pass too much judgement on a person who would buy such a low-end bike. I mean, there's a huge market for Hundai cars, no-name dollar store pots and pans, and computers running Windows. On the other hand, I kind of object to the designers of such a bike that would put so many useless features, just to make it look impressive, at the cost of making it poorly constructed. For example, it's got the lowest-end Shimano components. And not having reliable shifting is something that will really ruin the fun of a ride. Especially with indexed shifting where you can pretty much have none of the three adjustments right and still get reliable shifting. But it's got TRIPPLE suspension. Yep. Cheap suspension fork in front. Suspension in back. Plus a suspension seatpost. Oh, and the wheels. Deep dish aero wheels. And, in order to make it LOOK like it's got a low-spoke count, they've got them grouped like this, even though it's really a 36 spoke wheel. Dono. Most people are going to buy something that's cheap and looks fancy at the store. And that's fine. Fuji did a number on my bike to make it look fancy and expensive because everybody thinks it's much higher end than it is. But if the bike's too cheaply put together, people are just going to leave the bike in the garage and not ride it. And if they took all of the silly features off the bike (which they'd never do, naturally. Business is smarter than that) and make something more reasonable, they could probably get a fairly solid indstructable bike for the same price. All this does is reinforce that bikes are toys. Um, yeah, so sorry for subjecting you all to a rant about this poor person's Schwinn. Next time, I'll make fun of fixie riders, I promise. :D
'85 Schwinn Peloton
Craigslist find, now that the market has settled down a bit. This actually lasted a few weeks before selling, which allowed me to get a decent price. The frame goes to my tall friend Chris and the rest goes towards my bike. Superbe Pro drivetrain and Mavic/Specialized wheels.
