DYN 381 - 1937 Stevens 500cc
During 1931 AJS filed for voluntary liquidation in response to increasingly difficult trading conditions. The light car rights were purchased by the Willys-Overland Crossley concern of Heaton Chapel for ?9,500.0s.0d, the sidecar business passed to Diamond Motors and Matchless Motorcycles (Colliers) Limited purchased the rights AJS Motorcycles Ltd for ?20,000.0s.0d. The majority of the company's freehold property was sold, except for the Retreat Street Works and the company's creditors were paid off in full during 1932, marking both the end of AJS Motorcycles as an independent manufacturer and the marques founding family, the Stevens, involvement with it; it did not however, mark the end of the Stevens family involvement with motorcycles. In May 1932 the brothers established a new company, Stevens Brothers (Wolverhampton) Limited, based at the Retreat Street Works. With the aid of former business associates the new firm was able to develop and market a light commercial three wheeler powered by a 588cc side valve engine of their own design and manufacture. The commercial proved to be a success and together with the production of engines for OK Supreme and AJW enabled development to commence of a new motorcycle. The new machine, bearing the "Stevens" name on the tank, was introduced during May 1934. Offered in two forms the motorcycle was powered by a 250cc single cylinder overhead valve engine with dry sump lubrication coupled to a four speed Burman gearbox. A welded duplex frame equipped with Druid girder forks and surmounted by a three gallon fuel tank housed the new power unit. The standard road model was typed the DS1and featured a low mounted exhaust pipe and silencer whilst the US2 utilised an upswept exhaust system. The new model, produced in batches of twelve, was highly praised in the press, particularly for its handling and brakes and was quickly followed by a 350cc version which met with similar acclaim, justifiably prompting the company to adopt "The Most Refined Sports Machine in the World" as their slogan. In April 1935 the company added a 500cc variant to their catalogue, again offered in either a high or low pipe version, typed the LP5 and HP6. Although similar in all respects to its smaller siblings it was inevitably a little larger with a 55" wheelbase in comparison to the smaller models 54". The company had offered an optional Competition Kit for the three high pipe models from the beginning of 1935. Production rose to approximately 200 machines a year by 1937, with the marques popularity being aided by the successes of Tommy Deadman on the 500cc in competition. Production of motorcycles tailed off as the thirties drew to a close as the company undertook defence work. The machine offered was purchased from the factory during 1937 by Mr Jack Parker of Blackwell. According to correspondence, offered with the motorcycle, Mr Parker had purchased a three fifty HL3 model during 1935 which he campaigned in road racing and flat track, securing a gold medal at the ACU National Rally with it in 1935. Mr Parker was so impressed with the 350cc that in 1937 he ordered a full Competition 500cc from the Retreat Street works. The machine was built with a full lighting set and standard mudguards because Mr Parker needed to be able to use it on the road, although it was supplied with a set of racing mudguards together with a spare gearbox and a large number of competition spares. Upon taking receipt of the machine Mr Parker campaigned it at Brooklands, Silverstone and Dagenham.
