Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)
Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)
The Snowy Egret is a small white heron with a slender black bill, black legs, and yellow feet. In the breeding season, it has long lacy plumes on its back. In the 1800's the beautiful plumes of the Snowy Egret were in great demand by hunters as decorations for ladies' hats. In 1886 the value of these plumes were $32 per ounce, which was twice the price of gold at that time. As you might imagine, they were hunted nearly to extinction. The Snowy Egret is now protected in the USA by law, under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. They are today classified as "least concern" by the IUCN.
