Whelans, Dublin, Ireland. F**king awesome. Really odd how two bands I've wanted to see forever turned up round the corner as soon as I moved to Dublin (see Fridge). I've loved Gallon Drunk ever since I heard them play Drag 91 on a Peel Session way back in er, 91. I was lying in bed at my parents back from my first year at college listening in on a tiny radio and dreaming of escape. They sounded noisy, exciting and of places far away from Essex. As soon as got back to college I went out and bought the 12inch of Some Fools Mess (with free poster of a duck on a chopper which I still have somewhere). Truth be told I was in love as much with their sharp suited, quiffed up, psychobilly image as much as the cacophony they produced - they were the flipside to the similarly sartorially obsessed Tindersticks (whose second album portrayed them getting measured up for their made-to-measure suits). Coincidentally Terry Edwards played brass with both. When I started working in London I would sometimes see Max Decharne (one of the original line-up who left to start the Flaming Stars and ended up writing a book on 50's hipster slang) wandering around Camden. Camden was very much the spiritual home for both Gallon Drunk and the Tindersticks. Arlington Road, a track off their second album, was just round the corner from our regular drinking spot The Spread Eagle. It suddenyl occurs to me that there's a nice link with tonight as Whelans is on Camden Road. I can think of three people who I inititally bonded with purely on the fact we liked Gallon Drunk. First thoughts tonight were i) wow, I'm finally seeing them live, ii) hmm, not a great turnout, iii) James Johnston looks old. What a gig though. Johnston throwing himself around, spending as much time off the stage as on it and somehow managing to play keyboards, guitar, harmonica and do the vocals all at the same time.
Whelans, Dublin, Ireland. Terry Edwards on sax - the link between two of my favourite 90s bands; Gallon Drunk and the Tindersticks. Although never a member of the latter he played on their first two albums and they were never quite the same without his slightly manic squawking to counteract their mannered miserablism.
