Incubating Innovation through Cultural Competence and Collaboration without Borders.

The Joint-Mini Conference (JMC) brings together the ethnic caucuses of ALA: American Indian Library Association (AILA), Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), and REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. We also welcome the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) and the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) for a day of intellectual collaboration and networking opportunity for librarians. The event is free and is a meaningful day of professional development. The Joint-Mini Conference provides librarians and other professionals with an opportunity to exchange information about library services, collections and projects that serve minorities, newcomers and underserved populations in our communities.

Incubating innovation defines the function of nurturing favorable environmental conditions for the growth and development of creativity. Cultural competence in a collaborative environment enhances cultural values and welcomes diversity.

Our library neighborhoods may be uniquely challenging and exciting places where diverse communities are constantly learning to coexist. Embracing diversity, building tolerance, and fostering a collaborative environment pave the way to innovation.

The degree to which cultural competence and collaboration contributes to incubate innovation depends on the organizational culture and work environment. In an increasingly multicultural world, the ability to coordinate efforts to effectively work in a cross-cultural environment increases the likelihood for improvement.

Presenters are encouraged to explain from their own perspective ways in which their individual works or organizational policies, culture, resources, services, programs and activities have successfully fostered innovation through, but not limited to, the following:

  • Management of day-to-day operations while making room for a cross-cultural cooperative and creative environment

  • Support for an environment inviting to people of different ethnic groups

  • Creation of open cross-cultural opportunities to facilitate the generation of new ideas outside of the standard day-to-day routines

  • Empowerment of cross-cultural and multicultural/multilingual communities

  • Expansion of leadership opportunities to library staff from different cultural backgrounds

  • Encouragement of cross-cultural education and multicultural/multilingual learning skills
