Birthday On The (False) River
Birthday On The (False) River
Blake's birthday was Saturday (June 13th) and his father let us take their party barge out on False River in New Roads, Louisiana. Even though I practically grew up on False River, in all my 30+ years I have never been out on it, so this was a first for me. The group consisted of Blake & Amber, Baret and I, with Tommy & Mom. We had snacks, suntan lotion, good music, & alcohol - what else do you need? We stopped at Parrot's Lounge for a pee-break and refill (including birthday shots for the birthday boy) and later parked at Satterfields (the only gas pump on the water these days) and stayed for a drink. We ran into Amber's friend - Cody - at the bar (holy shit that boy is nothing but teh awesum - love you, sweetie!) and Blake belted out "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" on the karaoke. We then headed into the sunset, with a last pit stop at Jim's Lounge - where we were forced to leave shortly after entering b/c Amb (who knows everyone that works in there by name, mind you) didn't have her ID on her and - apparently - State Police were going to decide to do a raid in the 10 mins (if that) we were planning to stay in there & thank Blake's Dad for the use of the boat. I had my ID (I think she believed I didn't b/c of my attire sans purse) and she actually walked off to hold under the lights over the pool table to check it - lmao. When she handed it back to me she said, "Wow." Thanks. Bitch. The evening ended with me driving back home to Baton Rouge and Baret passed out drunk in the passenger seat; all in all, a good end. Truly, though, we had sooo much fun and plan to fix the boat up for his Dad and go out again. A little lagniappe for those that are interested; ya know how I love to give tidbits of info about local histories.... False River is exactly that. It is a giant, ox-bow lake and not a river at all. At least, not anymore... The great Mississippi once ran through it and the bustling towns of New Roads and St. Francisville (on opposite banks) grew up around this important waterway. And important it was: at the time it was the main channel of the Mississip until it was cut off - sometime 'round 1772 - due to seasonal flooding which caused it to cut a shorter channel to the east.
