My desk: tidied away
My desk: tidied away
I didn't have a desk when we moved to Edinburgh, and, as usual, there didn't seem to be a suitable one for sale anywhere, so I made my own. This is based on a metal rail on castors, meant to be used as a movable axle stand in a garage. It's a big, heavy thing made from thick steel box section, and some hardcore wheels. I got it cheap from Machine Mart on Piersfield Road. It is rather unsubtle in design and execution, since I had no workshop, not even a work bench, so there was no chance of being able to make up any proper joints. Everything is screwed or bolted together, and relies on the metalwork holding the uprights straight. The reason it's so big and strong, is that this monitor weighs a tonne, and I needed something that could carry it, and still also be able to be wheeled. Good enough excuse for me. The under-desktop with the keyboard slides out of the way so the unit itself, when stowed, isn't much deeper than the monitor itself. The sheet material is all three-quarter-inch marine plywood, polished with a dark wax. The rest of the timber is 2"x2" and 2"x4" pine, waxed the same way. I got the man at B&Q to cut up the sheet materials on his machine, and I sawed the pine to length using a desk hook on the edge of our coffee table.
