  • A track bicycle or track bike is a bicycle optimized for racing at a velodrome or outdoor track. Unlike road bicycles, the track bike is a fixed-gear bicycle and so has a single gear and neither freewheel nor brakes. Tires are narrow and inflated to high pressure to reduce rolling resistance.
  • A very simple bike used for track racing. It has a single-speed gear without freewheeling and there are no brakes.
  • A bicycle made for track (also called "velodrome") racing. These bikes resemble road-racing models but have only one gear and no brakes. The gear is "fixed," which means you can't coast. You control speed by holding back on the pedals.

These technologically advanced motorcycles are exhilarating to ride, but to really get the most out of a motorcycle’s performance capabilities a rider must develop his or her own personal performance. Riders need to take their skills to the next level. Now, in this book written specifically for sport riders, well-known journalist, racer, and riding school instructor Nick Ienatsch provides the tools and techniques to help riders analyze and develop that personal performance. If you’re an experienced rider, Nick will help you hone and perfect your skills, operate controls with even greater finesse, and apply race-proven techniques on the track—as well as on the street. If you’re a beginning rider, Nick will show you how to develop proper skills and safety habits that will add to your motorcycling enjoyment and build your confidence. Douglas built dirt track bike at the Kingswood factory late 1920s
image above: Douglas built dirt track bike at the Kingswood factory late 1920s. It had 3 gears but no clutch. Fred Fearnley's Douglas dirt track model has bigger tyres that were available as an option. The engine here has no protection. Not a good idea if you are about to take the bike onto a dirt track. Modern Speedway bikes look very much alike now, but this wasn’t the case with the early dirt bikes. Basically any powerful road going bike was stripped down, tuned up, tinkered with, for racing on the dirt tracks. It was common then to see the great British bike marques, in dirt track form. Famous names like John Alfred Prestwich (JAP), BSA, Royal Enfield, Rudge, Vincent, Velocette, Sunbeam and Douglas from factories the length and breadth of Great Britain once graced the tracks. Now speedway is dominated by Jawas from the Czech Republic and the Italian GM's. Other bikes have come and gone but the Jawa still remains as ideally suited to going sideways at speed!

We sat under a shade tree on a hillside at the Sunset Ridge MX track in Walnut, IL. Chad Wienen is #44 on Team Rockstar, MSR, Pro Taper, Yoshimura/Suzuki and is also from my hometown of Galena, IL! I was hoping to get some decent photos for his dad who just happens to be my son's boss!!
