The Government has purchased from Mr George Palmer, the Ruapuna Estate, containing 4431 acres, for closer settlement purposes. The land, is well known for its fertile qualities. It is fine grazing country and produces splended crops of turnips, rape and oats. It should be capable of subdivision into nine farms of about 500 acres each. The estate belonged to the late Mr John Ballantyen for many years. Ruapuna is the only estate in the Ashburton County acquired by the Government for closer settlement in the last dozen years, the Highbank Estate, purchased about 1898, being the last one.
A petition has been numerously signed int the Hastings district, praying the Government to take over the late Mrs G. P. Donnelly's property at Waimarama - about 600 acres. The petition will be forwarded in a few days.
The unsurveyed land in Taranaki available for future settlement is 92,000 acres, and the Maori land awaiting settlement 480,000 acres.
At a land ballot held at Blenheim, the Blue Mountain run was secured by Miss Violet Boyd of Kaikoura. The Leslie and Keke.nghu grazing runs were offered by auction, bu failed to bring the upset price.
The Seaview Estate, comprising 141 acres, and lying between St Clair, Caversham, and Green Island Bush near Dunedin, was sold by auction on March 7, Messrs. Hamilton being the buyers, at £22 per acre.
The Ermedale Estate, Groper's Bush, Southland, recently acquired by Government for closer settlement, has been subdivided into areas varying from 130 acres to 397 acres.
Mr W. D. Wilkie has acquired Mr R. E. Judson's interest in a section of 188 acres int he Kapua settlement, Waimate.
A farm of 50 acres, held by the Rhodes Estate, and situated near Temuka, was recently offered by auction, and passed in at £21 per acre.
The Allandale Estate, Hawarden, was offered by auction recently. The following is the result of the sale:
577 acres, Mr H. T. Matthews, £11 10/ per acre ; 787 acres, Mr H. M. Anderson, £7 15/ per acre, 651 acres, Mr J. Weld, £5 2/6 per acre ; 303 acres, Mr J. O'Carroll, £15 12/6 per acre ; 1246 acres, £9 per acre ; also 1159 acres, at £10 2/6 per acre, to Mr W. Neeve.
Efforts are being made to secure 80,000 acres in the closer settlement, comprised chiefly in the Wharfdale and Snowden runs.
The Mill Farm, Lincoln, comprising 82 acres, has been sold to Mr James Coles at £34 per acre.
A farm of 217 acres at Leeston, owned by Mrs M. C. Smith, (England), has been bought by the tenant, Mr Gilbert at £20 per acre.
Mr Page's farm of 331 acres at Ellesmere, was recently passed in at £31 per acre.
A block of land at Irwell, offered on behalf of the trustees of the late Mr H D Gardiner, was offered by auction in five sections on March 5. Mr H. Bennett secured 48 acres at £20 per acre, Mr Hyslop 60 acres at £37 per acre.
