'Bike-Partisan' Conference
Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), James Oberstar (D-Minn.), Thomas Petri (R-Wis.), and Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.) at a July 30 press conference on the west lawn of the Capitol asked delegates, staff, and journalists at the upcoming Democratic and Republican national conventions to ride bicycles around town. Humana Inc. and the not-for-profit Bikes Belong are providing bicycles, racks, and equipment to host cities Denver and Minneapolis-Saint Paul. A Humana spokeswoman announced much of the equipment would be donated to bicycle causes after the conventions. The congressmen, chuckling at the “bike-partisan” nature of the event, said bicycling is an answer to the country’s health, transportation, and energy problems, and Blumenauer called this high-visibility bipartisan challenge “the biggest bike promotion in the history of the nation.” From the press release: Representatives Pedal Bike-Sharing Challenge to Delegates and Convention-Goers: 10,000 Rides and 25,000 Miles! WHO: - Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) - Rep. James Oberstar (D-MN) - Rep. Thomas Petri (R-WI) - Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN) WHAT: Reps. Blumenauer, Oberstar, Petri and Wamp will host a news conference to announce a "bike-partisan" challenge at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions as part of a new bike sharing program. Humana Inc. and the not-for-profit Bikes Belong are bringing 1,000 free bikes to the political conventions as part of Freewheelin, a bike sharing initiative whereby bikes and bike stations are set up throughout the city for people to use for short trips. Bike sharing is a good for the body, the environment and the wallet. As part of Freewheelin, the Congressmen are challenging delegates and all convention-goers to get on a bike and, collectively, participate in 10,000 bicycle rides and tally up 25,000 miles. WHEN: Wednesday, July 30, 2008, 10:00 a.m. WHERE: U.S. Capitol (West Lawn) WHY: Amassing 25,000 miles of cycling would burn more than one million calories and significantly reduce the carbon footprint in Denver and Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The challenge will also play a vital role in helping alleviate traffic congestion and transportation costs for the duration of the conventions.

Curious George Rides a Bike... and More Tales of Mischief (Scholastic Video Collection) [VHS]
Children's book publisher Scholastic has bundled video adaptations of five award-winning picture books on Curious George Rides a Bike... and come up with a treat for youngsters 4 to 9. Kids-lit purists will appreciate the spare animation; the title story and Flossie and the Fox, in fact, are not animated but rather proffer the books' original illustrations accompanied by a narrator's enjoyable readings. Curious George Rides a Bike is a classic episode in H.A. Rey's series in which George rides a bicycle into several misadventures. The Great White Man-Eating Shark, about a boy who uses his resemblance to a shark to scare swimmers, is even more witty with a touch of animation. The aforementioned Flossie is a cute tale about a girl who outwits a vain fox, while the ironic The Cat and the Canary and The Happy Lion, the latter about a Parisian lion who takes a stroll, both look wonderful here. --Tom Keogh
