I currently live in chaos! XD The previous owners had used a cheap faux finish effect on the fireplace brick, which looked awful and the fireplace was also badly damaged (lots of chips & chunks missing from the brick). We'd like to have it redone some day but for now we decided to make a quick fix by repairing all the chipped bricks and painting it white. After looking through hundreds of old home magazines & books, I've come to love painted fireplaces since they were so common in mid-century homes. We love the change and it really brightens up the room. We also used left over orange paint from my office for the wall next to the fireplace (we're painting the beams throughout the house a dark black/brown) and we're adding shelving to the wall. Plan to add pillows and cushions beneath them to make a small seating area next to the fireplace. The vintage poll lamp was a recent $10 garage sale find. Husband is currently rewiring it and getting it cleaned up. Dolls were a thrift shop find. Everything else (including large vintage African sculpture) are family heirlooms we inherited. Still got a ton of stuff to unpack...
Naugahyde Banquette
Naugahyde Banquette
Caption reads: An inviting conversation area in this family room has been built with a half-circle banquette facing a handsome fireplace faced with brick. Termed a conversation pit because it is lower than the rest of the room, it is an excellent way to set aside a specific area for talk. Banquette is upholstered in a leather-like material that can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Black covering complements the old brick with its natural touches of black. Bright pillows and an ashtray add color. To give the banquette a finished look, carpeting has been continued up the back from the floor. A teak table and chairs and metal sculpture keep the modern theme established by the architecture of the house.

Fireplace Glass & Hearth Cleaner
Spray on and wipe off to easily remove creosote, soot and grime on fireplace enclosure doors and hearth. Safe, nonacidic ultra cling formula sticks without running. This is an all-purpose, hard-surface cleaner chosen particularly because of its effectiveness against the sticky products of wood combustion, soot, and creosote. Contains a strong solvent to dissolve and carry away the gummy residue which builds up on fireplace glass doors or woodstove glass doors.
Specially thickened formula clings to vertical surfaces for longer and better cleaning action. Use with a brush and water to clean hearth stone or brick. Spray on and wipe off iron and steel woodstoves. Non-acidic formula will not attack metal. Safe and effective. Contains no abrasives to scratch glass or metal. If a soft abrasive is needed for a particularly difficult clean-up job.
