A Queen Anne Style Villa - Moonee Ponds
A Queen Anne Style Villa - Moonee Ponds
This wonderful concoction of Art Nouveau fretwork, windows of stained glass and pressed metal panels appear on a grand Edwardian villa in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds. Built around the turn of the Twentieth Century, this large villa has been built in the Queen Anne style, which was mostly a residential style inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in England, but also encompassed some of the more stylised elements of Art Nouveau, which gave it an more decorative look. The red brick from which the villa is built is in keeping with the Arts and Crafts movement, as is the slate tiled roof. Yet the stylised fretwork of the wide return verandah, the stained glass windows and the pressed metal panel of "fish scales" on the undulating gable over the bay window are all very Art Nouveau in design. Queen Anne style was most popular around the time of Federation. With complex roofline structures and undulating facades, many Queen Anne houses fell out of fashion at the beginning of the modern era, and were demolished. Moonee Ponds, like its neighbouring boroughs of Ascot Vale and Essendon, was etablished in the late 1880s and early 1890s. However, unlike its neighbours, it was an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens. Well proportioned villas like these would have suited a large affluent Edwardian family, and would have required a small retinue of servants to maintain.
A Victorian Villa with a Queen Anne Facelift - Moonee Ponds
A Victorian Villa with a Queen Anne Facelift - Moonee Ponds
This beautiful Victorian villa of red brick built in a quiet, tree lined street in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds received a facelift in the early years of the Twentieth Century to modernise it. Built in the 1880s or 1890s the corrugated iron roof, bull nosed verandah and iron lacework of this asymmetrical villa are very Victorian in spirit. However, in the early 1900s, the original front windows were given new Art Nouveau inspired stained glass ones, as was the wooden front door, and the front gable received a more ornate eave and gable with ornamental latticework. In spite of this amalgum of two very different styles, the house is quite charming, and its combination gives it an interesting character. Houses like these would have suited a medium sized Victorian family of moderate means, and would have required a live in maid-of-all work to help the family maintain it.
