This is the long body wrap I made for a friend of mine whose birth I will attend within the next month or so. She asked me to make some more of the rice heat packs I brought to her first birth as a doula, and I also thought it would be a good idea to replicate another of her favorite hot packs. One of the things I noticed during her first birth was that we tended to run out of hot packs quickly because they felt so very good; this problem will be relieved by the addition of more hot packs. But the other thing I noticed was the placement of the packs; my friend seemed to put them in a band that wrapped around her lower torso. Could I make ONE wrap that accomplished the benefits of heat therapy, making it more easy to deal with because it was a single wrap? For this wrap, I double-layered the cowboy fabric, and make one giant "pocket" out of it. I used double seams wherever I felt like it. I poured two dry cups of medium and long-grain white rice into the closed-ended fabric tube, and just made a seam on top of it. I repeated this a bunch of times. I double-seamed the remaining open edge, and I even rolled the fabric in on itself to avoid intenal fraying. That's all there was to it. These chambers were super easy to make. In the other chambered heat packs I make, sometimes it's hard, because in order to get the chambers plump (yet still be able to fit the edges of the piece under the sewing machine's foot) I sew the chambers first and stuff them from the side. I've lost a lot of rice that way over the years! But each project teaches me more about how to be less of a klutz. Two helpful things: 1) Sewing machine needles will sew over a horizontally-placed pin like buttah, baby. 2) Sewing machine needles will win in any street fight with a grain of rice. Making your own hot packs for a birth is incredibly inexpensive and makes a lot of sense. Add some dry grains to cloth and sew. Boom. Done. Add herbs, if you want. But you don't have to. The cloth can be an old sock, and it can be tied very tightly. And if, at any time, the hot/cold pack gets wet, soiled, ripped, or otherwise rendered less functional, simply toss it, and maybe even compost it (the insides, for sure). The weight of this eight-chambered thing is actually really comforting; I imagine that when it gets heated up, it will be even more of a comfort. Giddy-up, little doggies! Yee-ha!
