Pyrite on Calcite Specimen
Pyrite on Calcite Specimen
Oh, to one day pull such a rock from the ground! An amazing specimen seen at the Tucson Rock and Gem show, this "rock" on display was photographed through glass. There is also Sphalerite in this piece found at the Huanzala Mine, Dos de Mayo Province, Huanuco, Peru. The piece measures about 4" long. The pyrite is the golden cubes, the calcite is the shiny white and translucent crystal, and sphalerite is the dark gemmy mineral. By the way pyrite is also known as Fool's Gold. I would imagine that this particular piece would be worth hundreds of dollars.

This image is one of many of the many forms of glass featured in this great presentation at the museum. The previous 3 images show fiberglas used for a boat, insulation and filters and even a souvenir glass necktie.
