Mintage: 7,200 After a 34-year hiatus, the ten dollar gold piece was resurrected in 1838. Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head design was used for the first time on a gold coin and only 7,200 examples were struck. Today, it is estimated that 75-100 are known with the great majority showing heavy circulation and falling into the VF-EF range. In properly graded AU, the 1838 eagle is very rare with perhaps a dozen known and Uncirculated examples are extremely rare with four or five accounted for. Because of its status as a first-year-of-issue, the 1838 eagle is in great demand among multiple groups of collectors and competition is keen for the few really attractive examples that exist.
