going to gas land
going to gas land
Once upon a time there was an enchanted kingdom known as Gas Land. The founders called it Gas land because calling it the Land of Gas just didn’t sound right. Anyway, Gas Land was a lot like Grace Land in that it was a charmed and seemingly mystical place, except in Gas Land Elvis died of self immolation instead of choking on a deep fried Mars bar. Gas Land was ruled by a great and benevolent queen named Queen Edna who tried to keep all that went on in her kingdom fair and on the up and up. In this way the people knew that those things like gold fish, tap shoes, squeegees, bicycle horns and gasoline were priced fairly in accordance with what the market truly dictated and not what a few rich corporate bastards at the top thought would be a better price to increase their already obscene wealth. Often Queen Edna found she had to chide these rich corporate bastards for artificially increasing the price of gas for such natural and unavoidable occurrences as sunspots, a cloudy day, an eclipse of the moon, a backed up sewer in Venezuela, a decrease in the infant death rate in Pakistan, an increase in the penguin population of Tierra del Fuego or the rate of condom use at the Vatican. All of these occurrences affect the flow and price of refined oil products, the rich corporate bastards claimed, but when asked for proof they had none. When the price of gasoline increased because of a minor earth tremor on some unknown island in Oceania, the rich corporate bastards raised the price of gas claiming that supply in that area of the planet was at a premium and that would directly effect prices in Gas Land. But Queen Edna looked them in the eye and shook her head. “No,” she said. “Natural disasters must be much closer to home to effect gas prices and what happens down the line takes time to reach us. So, reduce your embarrassingly high prices, then go and ask your wives to spank you and dress up as little girls.” This was how Queen Edna protected the people of Gas Land from the gouging of greedy corporations, and her people loved her – especially the rich corporate bastards whose wives now dressed them up as little girls. The day came, however, when Queen Edna took her vacation. She chose Peru and had a small cottage build near the Nazca Lines where she lounged and read the work of Carlton Mellick III. One evening as the desert sun sunk beneath the gritty Peruvian horizon, a strange craft came out of the sky. It landed and a door opened. A beautiful woman came out. She was dressed like a Hollywood starlet of the 1950s in full length satin gown with a ray gun holster round her corseted waste. She looked at Edna and said, “Goin’ my way?” Queen Edna thought for a moment and then said, “Why the hell not?” She dropped he Carlton Mellik III novel and walked to the space ship where she took the Hollywood starlet’s hand and let her lead her into the craft. The space ship rose for a moment they flew off into space taking Queen Edna to some place we’ll talk about in another story. Hint: it’s good. Back in Gas Land, news of Queen Edna’s alien abduction was greeted with glee by the rich corporate bastards in the little pink dresses their wives made them wear. The tabloids also had a field day saying such things as Queen Edna had been whisked off to a distant planet of lesbians where it’s always 1954. As the people of Gas land read these tabs, they failed to notice the price of gas increasing for no discernible reason. It was getting so expensive that there was a panic. People fear the price was increasing because of a shortage. They lined up and fought each other to get to the pumps first. Some people sat their grandmothers in line while they went to work so their place in the gas line would be secure. Watching all of this was a girl who was about twelve years old. Her name was Carenza and she asked the people why they were fighting and paying the outrageous prices for the gas. “Because we have to, kid. Stop bugging us adults,” was the general reply. “No you don’t have to,” Careza said. “Boycott the gas all together; or insist the government create strong anti-collusion legislation and appoint officials to enforce it; make sure you protect our supply of gas so it stays here when the price normalizes and isn’t bought up by foreign countries which will increase our price again; stop existing in a car culture and start living in a people culture.” The people stood dumfounded. This kid was brilliant. Those were all good ideas. One man stepped out from the crowd and said, “You mean we could do all these things ourselves, even though Queen Edna is on a distant planet of lesbians where it’s always 1954?” “Yes!” Carenza said. “You are your own government. Take control.” The man thought for a moment and said, “And we tell those rich corporate bastards in the little pink dresses to bugger off?” “Yes!” said Carenza. “And control our own destiny?” “Yes.” “And create a fairer and more just world for ourselves and our chil
