gold markings 585 - Markings
Universally known and admired as a peacemaker, Dag Hammarskjold concealed a remarkable intense inner life which he recorded over several decades in this journal of poems and spiritual meditations, left to be published after his death. A dramatic account of spiritual struggle, Markings has inspired hundreds of thousands of readers since it was first published in 1964.

Markings is distinctive, as W.H. Auden remarks in his foreword, as a record of "the attempt by a professional man of action to unite in one life the via activa and the via contemplativa." It reflects its author's efforts to live his creed, his belief that all men are equally the children of God and that faith and love require of him a life of selfless service to others. For Hammarskjold, "the road to holiness necessarily passes through the world of action." Markings is not only a fascinating glimpse of the mind of a great man, but also a moving spiritual classic that has left its mark on generations of readers.

Markings on Envelope Mailed From Germany to St. Louis, 1893
Markings on the back of the envelope mailed from Germany to St. Louis in 1893. There are two interesting items to be seen: One indicates that the mail "Arrived Late" to St. Louis. The lateness is due to railroad delay, since most U.S. mail was carried by trains. The post office marked such mail to tell its customers why their letters were delivered later than expected. The other receiving mark on the back of the envelope shows that the letter was received by Sub-Station 13 of the St. Louis post office. Sub-station markings are not common. Scan enhanced with GIMP.

Measuring, Marking, and Layout: A Builder's Guide
-- Provides simple techniques for accurate measuring using a number of basic tools

The common and sensible dictum among carpenters--"Measure twice, cut once"--is only the beginning for Carroll, who manages to take some very complex information and distill it into readable and understandable form. There are chapters devoted to laying out foundations, frames, roofs, stairs, masonry units, and finishing materials, and many little-known tricks of the trade and shortcuts. Carroll covers all the basics of tools and techniques, shows how to measure larger dimensions on projects while working alone, and shows that one needn't be a master mathematician to assure accuracy in projects, nor use space-age, high-tech equipment to achieve near-perfect results in a building project. From the simplest how-to project for a home handyperson to constructing an entire house, proper, accurate measurements are the very foundation of a successful result. Using common sense and care in measuring can save time, materials, and money on any home repair or construction plan. This is the book to tell you everything you need to know before you get started. --Mark A. Hetts
