Forest Hills Post Office
Forest Hills Post Office
Forest Hills, Queens, New York City, New York, United States The Forest Hills Station Post Office is located at 106-28 Queens Boulevard in the Forest Hills neighborhood of the borough of Queens, New York City, New York. The post office faces north on a spur of Queens Boulevard at the corner of 70th Avenue. It is set off from the major divided thoroughfare by the triangular MacDonald Memorial Park. Adjacent to the west is a synagogue (1949) and on the south is a six-story warehouse. The surrounding blocks contain mixed-use structures, most of which are brick apartment buildings of from six to twenty stories with stores at street level. The building is set far back from the sidewalk on a modestly landscaped site consisting of hedges and a small lawn at the front. A driveway on 70th Avenue leads to a rear parking area. The post office retains its integrity to a high degree on both the exterior and interior. This nomination includes one contributing building. The Forest Hills Station Post Office is a one-story flat-roofed building clad with reddish-brown terra cotta above a base of Carnelian granite. The building is basically square in plan, but from the exterior it reads as three interlocking rectangular units—a front unit incorporating the public lobby, a taller rear unit that generally incorporates the workroom and entrance, and a side unit that incorporates ;he workroom as expanded in 1965-6. The building is asymmetrical in composition. The building is entered from a platform that is three steps up from the wide sidewalk. The ends of the platform are partially lined with low terra-cotta walls with a flagpole. The entrance, at the northeast corner of the front elevation, is outlined by a simple flat molding. The recessed double doors are bronze with glass panels. Above the entrance, on two lines, are the words "FOREST HILLS STATION FLUSHING NEW YORK" in terra cotta. Sten Jacobson's terra-cotta relief sculpture, "Spirit of Communication," floats above the entry. To the side of this figure, in larger terra-cotta letters, are the words "UNITED STATES POST OFFICE." The window arrangement of the front facade is quite simple with five long vertical rectangular windows with metal sash divided into sixteen panes deeply recessed between terra-cotta piers. At the western end of the front elevation are a pair of small rectangular windows with four-light sash. The east elevation has seven rectangular windows with metal sash like that of the front facade. The front rectangular unit has a single window on the west elevation. The west side of the larger rectangular unit has a brick wall with no openings. This section of the building, constructed in 1965-6, extends to the rear beyond the original building line. At the side of this extension and to the r ear of the original building is the mailing platform, also constructed in 1965-6. The interior of the post office has undergone some alterations, "he public lobby, originally rectangular, is now L-shaped with the .ront doors leading into a modern vestibule. The vestibule leads into a box lobby, which is now separated from the main lobby by an anodized aluminum and glass wall. In the main part of the lobby the screenline has been completely altered. However, some original features of the lobby remain ,including the black terrazzo floor and Travertine marble covering the walls to about seven feet high and window and door surrounds. The Forest Hills Station Post Office is architecturally significant as a distinguished and unusual example of a federal building built to a streamlined, modern design. Built in 1937-8 to the design of consulting architect Lorimer A. Rich, the building's form, composition and sparslty of ornamentation are derived from the International style - one of the major stylistic representations of modernism in America. The building is additionally distinctive for its extruded terra-cotta facades, which represents a new and innovative use of this building material, and for its handsome exterior terracotta relief sculpture designed by artist Sten Jacobsson. Forest Hills Station was one of a large number of post offices built in New York State during the 1930s as a response to the unemployment caused by the Depression. Most of these post offices were designed in simple, standarized versions of the Colonial Revival style, which had become the accepted idiom for federal architecture in the 1920s and 1930s. By the late 1930s, however, some post offices began to exhibit forms and decoration derived from the Art Deco and International styles. Many of these buildings were the work of independent consulting architects, who were hired under an amendment to the Public Buildings Act of 1926 designed to alleviate unemployment, rather than the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury. The Forest Hills Station is one of the finest small-scale modernistic federal buildings in New York State ; the success of its d

I thought it interesting the USGS did not show or label Travertine Palms on the original topo. It's like they didn't know the palms were there. The blue label PALMS on this map is my waypoint label and is not on the original topo. 6.4 miles total distance for the loop. I want to go a little farther west next time and check out the ROCKS and POINT benchmarks.

This is the first book entirely devoted to travertine, a material in use for over 4000 years. The single-author work is a valuable reference source for travertine, covering all aspects of travertine origins, formation, composition, flora and fauna, occurrence and utilisation, as well as covering allied continental carbonates such as lake marls, calcretes and beachrocks. Travertine, some forms of which are often known as ‘tufa’, is of particular significance as a source of environmental information (fossils and isotope geochemistry), often permitting the reconstruction of past environments. Reviews of dating techniques, classification and geomorphology are included and the author attempts to provide an unbiased but critical appraisal of current models of travertine formation. Currently, travertine is in great demand as a building and ornamental stone. It has also been exploited in unconventional ways, such as ‘petrifying springs’ and by way of unusual and little known artistic techniques. Scaling of pipes and boilers is often the result of processes allied to travertine formation. The phenomenon is described parallel to methods of scale elimination and compared with natural processes where travertine formation is inhibited. Travertine sites are of special scientific interest, with their rich and often unique floras and faunas displaying their unique biodiversity, and their unusual and often fragile biota. Conservation issues are discussed, together with the description of travertine fossils and occurrences throughout the geological record. The content will be of interest to carbonate sedimentologists, hydrobiologists, palaeoclimatologists, physical geographers, water treatment engineers, astrobiologists, architects, and sculptors.
