Focal Lengths - Part 4
This tutorial shows the change in perspective when filling the frame with the same subject using different focal lengths. As the subject-to-camera distance changes, the photographer needs to zoom in to a longer focal length in an attempt to maintain the same composition. If you look carefully, you will see the difference in each frame. The wide angle shots are "more angular" as the perspective changes due to being closer to the subject. Another problem that you sometimes encounter as you "zoom with your feet," is that the view sometimes becomes obstructed, as shown when the trees start to get in the way and then the rise in the ground becomes a problem, as seen in the bottom row. For the last frame, I stood on my car bumper to see over the hill that was now in my way. You will notice a general tendency for the top of the building to appear more and more level. You will also notice that the building and other objects sort of "come around" to appear flatter as I move farther away and zoom in more. This shows the "flattening" effect of using a telephoto lens. I admit that these are not perfect duplications of the framing from shot-to-shot, but I tried the best I could to maintain the subject at the same size within each shot. If I ever do this again, I will try it with a subject that I can see for a greater distance without obstruction. To see subtle differences, click on "All sizes" and then maybe even "Original" and then move through the images one at the time, starting at the top left and moving across the row before going to the next row. To see more obvious differences, go to the "Original" size, pick one column and move down that column. For instance, in the first column you would compare 17, 34, 70, 95, 135, and 170 mm this way. Nikon D200, using both 17-55 and 70-300 mm lenses. If there ever is a "next time," I will use my 18-70 mm to fill in the gap from 55 to 70 mm.
Focal Lengths - Part 2
Which view qualifies as “scenic?” I say they all do. There isn’t a lens that is limited to “scenery” and there isn’t a lens that can not take “scenic” views. It just depends on what you are looking for. The red barn. which is dead center in each shot, is about one mile away from my position. I didn't spend much time trying to get rid of the haze, so I apologize for that, but that's not the point of this exercise. The Nikon D200 has a 1.5X crop factor, so I have shown both the actual focal length and the standardized 35 mm equivalent focal length. In comparing cameras of different formats, it is important to utilize the standardized lengths to compensate for the difference in crop factors.
