Blue Hour Banff
Blue Hour Banff
Here is a single-frame, blue-hour image of Banff town… taken from the “Green Spot”… approximately an hour or so after I captured the ”Castle Junction Dusk” image that I posted on my stream yesterday. Although most people refer to this location as the “Green Spot”… I think the “Bald Spot” is probably more appropriate. This historic viewpoint with its commanding view of Banff town and Mount Rundle can be found along the Mount Norquay Road. The “Bald Spot” is about the size of a football field, and apparently it looks exactly the same now as it did a hundred years ago. So what do you think caused this “Bald Spot”? Certainly not stress… nor aging! Speculation runs wild! Perhaps it was hit by a meteor shower? Or maybe a UFO landed there at some point in time? Was it a “crop circle” in the mountains? If you know anything more about why this particular spot is clear while the rest of the landscape is forested… I’d really appreciate it if you would let me know. If you don’t know… why not simply take a guess… let’s see who can come up with the most ridiculous reason for its existence. :) This one is a wee bit dark… you’ll probably see a lot more detail once you press “L” and view it large. Nikon D300, Sigma 10-20mm at 20mm, aperture of f5.6, with a 42 second exposure.

Summer in Canada was a little like summer in Korea; wet. But, undaunted and unwilling to spend each and every day stuck in the house, I dragged my cousin Damien out into his backyard for a photo shoot between showers. Being the biggest ham in the universe, he was not difficult to convince. Now, I had a lot of fun doing this shoot, but I learned a thing or two about the natural world; while rain is certainly good for grass and trees and corn, it is also really good for fire ants and mosquitos. Both of which had their way with me while I was flat on my belly in the yard for an hour. Strobist Information: SB28 @ 1/4 power, shoot through umbrella high camera left SB80DX @ 1/4 power, shoot through umbrella, high camera right SB25 @ 1/8 power gelled green in the tree house * I also have a 4 stop ND Cokin filter on my lens to darken things up a notch and make it easier on the lights since it was still pretty bright out
