I promised Robert La Gesse of Triagility I would post this note when I found a suitable illustration (thanks for the photo, Mia!). The object above is a letter scale from my grandparents’ and now my aunt’s house in Winchester, England. Note that it doesn't need to show the letter's precise weight, but rather just which weight category (i.e. price bracket) it fits in. But the colors are just the display mechanism. The mechanism could just as easily be a set of numbers, or pictures. The thought I had today was that “Weight 2.0” might be a very good seminar: How do we determine/allow/aggregate/balance how important any given item - be it a meeting request or a photograph - is to not just me and the author, but to my immediate community, and potentially the global community?" Esthr adds: I'm not sure the idea conld sustain an entire day's workshop, but it's an important concept. The top 2 rows are Steelyard weights because they have either holes drilled through the top or traces of iron which once were loops for hanging them on a steelyard scale. All have been found on arable land where even today farmers still set up tables to weigh and sell strawberries etc to the public who come and pick their own fruit. Of course these ancient weights were not exactly accurate and are illegal by today's standards, but we had to start somewhere ! The 4th row are mainly loom and spindle weights as used by weavers and wool spinners. On the bottom row are 'spoon weights' which as you can see were cast using the bowl of a spoon as a mould. This was common practice as far back as Roman times and it is said they were used as ammunition for the type of slingshot used in those days, ( the ones that are swung around in the air before letting go ).
