This splendid work ranks among the most magnificent Ovid Editions ever produced.
Originally commissioned by King Louis XIV for the edification of his son ,the Dauphin and first published in this form
Engraved frontispiece by Charles LeBrun.Engraved vignette on titlepage.Letter of 1674 from LeBrun to Bensérade describing the symbolism of the frontispiece ,mentioning that this composition speaks for itself and doesn't need much explication.

"Sébastien Cramoisy died in 1669 and was succeeded as Director of the Imprimerie Royale by his grandson, Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy (1642-87). Under him the Press devoted much of its time to the production of the Cabinet du Roi , a series intended to leave no doubts in the mind of posterity of the greatness of Louis XIV . These volumes were, however, collections of plates , rather than books, and the best examples of typography of this period are to be found among the smaller illustrated works. Benserade's Ovid with its charming vignettes (some by Sebastien LeClerc ,but majority by Francois Chauveau), clearly foreshadows the French illustrated book of the eighteenth century"...

Vignette (französisch = Weinrankenzierat). Kleines Zierstück, meist mit ornamentaler oder allegorischer Zeichnung zur Ausschmückung des Buches.
Besonders häufig in Büchern des 17. und 18.Jh. (Rokoko) anzutreffen. Man unterscheidet Kopf-Vignette (-> Fleuron), Titel-Vignette und Schluß-Vignette (-> Cul de lampe).
Der Drucker bezeichnet als Vignette heute Zierstücke, die als Ganzes zum Schmuck von Büchern und Drucksachen dienen.
