Washington Street, corner of West Street [Photograph]. ([ca. 1870]). Retrieved from https://ark.digitalcommonwealth.org/ark:/50959/nv935j16s
These two depictions of streets illustrate the stark contrast in Celestine's landscape and perspective between the early years of her life and after 1870. To the left is an abstract road, houses, and water in Lynn. Clouds are suggested through blocks of fabric and tiny stitches, houses tilt on their foundations, and greenery knows no bounds. The photograph on the right is from Washington Street, from the year Celestine and her family moved there. There is a very apparent squareness to the buildings, angularity to the road, and an absence of nature. The overall contrast in medium demonstrates how quilting can be used to both manipulate time and recapture memory.
