Celestine's use of deep pinks, browns, blues and reds comprised of silk, satin and velvet fabric as seen in this quilt square can be attributed to her occupation and ability to access the latest fashions in late 19th-century Boston. As a seamstress, she would have known that crazy quilts were in style, and that the burgundy velvet fabric that outlined the blocks was a popular textile of the time. Crazy Quilt was most likely made of scraps from garments she was working on at the tailor's shop.
