The Shawnee County Fire District #1, otherwise known as Silver Lake Fire Department, is a public fire and emergency services organization. It has one full time employee who is the fire chief and six part-time employees. All other members are paid-on-call personnel.
Silver Lake Fire District provides fire and emergency medical services to the City of Silver Lake, Silver Lake Township, Menoken Township and Grove Township. This encompasses an area of approximately 100 square miles.
Our call volume averages about 300 calls per year categorized as:*
45.77% Medical (illness and trauma including motor vehicle accidents)
14.81% Fires (structure and natural vegetation)
30.69% Service/Good Intent (calls that turn out to be non-emergency)
4.23% False alarms (automatic alarm malfunctions and other)
4.50% Hazardous conditions (CO detection, propane leaks, train derailments, gas spills)

Silver Lake Fire continuously strives to improve its service delivery to the community. We have done this by implementing NFPA standards, acquiring better apparatus, instituting professional training, accepting only competent applicants, establishing mutual aid agreements and acquiring digital communications. We offer a variety of services such as fire suppression, emergency medical response, fire prevention and education, pre-incident surveys, motor vehicle extrication, grain bin rescue, and hazardous material incident stabilization.
