In PE, all students have 2 hours of high quality PE every week. One hour is taught by Mr Thompson, a specialist PE teacher, which focuses on skill acquisition, development and application into game situations and uses competition to further develop the children's skills, techniques and tactics. The curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. It is also a priority to encourage all students to develop a love for sport and physical activity that will continue into secondary school and beyond to help support an active healthy life.
The other is taught by the class teacher using Real PE. Real PE is a unique, child-centred approach that engages and challenges every child. It focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning.
Every child in year 6 takes part in competitive activity against another school, in addition to the various matches and competitions in a variety of sports against other schools for different year groups. There is a wide range of extra-curricular PE clubs run by school staff as well as by specialist coaches. Sidney Stringer Primary takes part in the Coventry School Games competitions and we offer trip opportunities to watch professional sporting events, including going to see Manchester City play in the Champions League.
We have an annual Sports Day where every child competes in a series of challenges on behalf of their house against the other houses. We also have a Health and Fitness block of work for all year groups where children complete fitness tests which enables them to show personal progression as they compete against their scores from the year before. Sometimes they even manage to break the Sidney Stringer Primary school fitness records!
