As our pupils progress through their primary school life, our intention is for them to be able to understand the world, have the ability to reason mathematically and to appreciate the beauty and power of maths. 

At Sidney Stringer Primary we believe every child can become a successful mathematician. To do so, children need to be: fluent in every mathematical concept taught, be able to express ideas and arguments through good reasoning skills and can solve a variety of problems applying their maths skills. 

For children to achieve in maths they will: learn concepts through concrete materials, develop these ideas to pictorial methods and advance into a more abstract approach as their depth and understanding of the concept increases. 

All staff at SSP want all children to succeed in their maths lessons; we have high expectations of quantity and quality of work in books and verbal communication. Through discussions and open questions, teachers will develop children’s understanding and secure a real depth of knowledge and skills. 

In the EYFS we plan mathematical activities that address the learning objectives as set out in Development Matters. We provide opportunities for children to develop their understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape and space through a variety of activities, both child and teacher initiated. This allows children to enjoy, explore, practise and talk confidently about mathematics.
