At Sidney Stringer Primary we believe that children need opportunities to be creative, to evaluate their success, and to learn about how the products that they use every day have been designed and made. 

We teach our children the knowledge, skills and understanding of designing and making functional products with a real-life purpose. We feel it is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design, by exploring existing inspirational designs, and by evaluating products that we encounter in the world in which we all live and work. Children have opportunities to apply knowledge that they have learned in Maths, Science and Art. 

Our DT curriculum consists of 2 areas; Technical Knowledge and Disciplinary Knowledge. There are 5 strands of Technical Knowledge - Structures, Mechanisms, Sewing & Textiles, Food & Nutrition and Electrical Systems. Children learn Technical Knowledge through a carefully planned, progressive sequence of learning. Children work on projects from a sequence of planned design briefs. Children learn the Disciplinary Knowledge needed to follow a well-structured design process; Design, Make, Build. This includes evaluating existing products that fit part or all of their design brief. Children revisit the skills within these areas as they move through the sequence of Technical Knowledge. 

We recognise that we are preparing our children for a world that is yet to be invented. We aim to equip them with the knowledge and skills to be the designers, innovators and manufacturers that lead the way through the 21st century.
