Public Notice
School bus riders, while in transit, are under the supervision of the bus driver and the bus aide(s). All riders and parents of riders should become thoroughly familiar with the following regulations governing school bus riders.
Be on time at the designated bus stop - this helps keep the bus on schedule.
Stay off the road at all times while waiting for the bus.
Be careful in approaching the place where the bus stops. Do not move toward the bus until the bus has come to a complete stop. If you must cross the road to board the bus, wait to receive a signal from the driver as to when it is safe to cross the road. You should walk across the road 10 feet in front of the bus.
Remain in your assigned seat while the bus is moving. You are to sit only in your assigned seat unless otherwise instructed by the driver.
Be alert to a danger signal from the driver.
Remain in the bus in the event of a road emergency until instructions are given by the driver or the bus aide(s).
Keep hands and head inside the bus at all times while on the bus. Do not throw anything out of the window. Do not lower the windows past the stop line.
Talk in a normal voice (6 inch). Loud talking, screaming, hollering, and loud laughter might distract the driver and cause an accident.
Be quiet on the bus while approaching a railroad crossing and while at a railroad crossing. This is a Federal Law so that the driver can listen for approaching trains.
Treat bus seats and the rest of the bus as good or better than you would your furniture at home. Vandalism can result in students being required to pay for the repair costs.
Assist in keeping the bus clean. Do not litter. This is your home for a portion of the day. Be proud of your area in your home. Keep it clean.
Bring no animals, insects, or anything alive on the bus. Law forbids this unless the animal is an aid for special needs student (service animal).
Keep books, coats, musical instruments, bags, hands, head, feet, and other objects out of the bus aisle so the driver has clear vision of the rear bus window and the aisle is clear to use while loading and unloading. Also the aisle may be used as an escape route in the event of an emergency.
Make sure you take all of your possessions off of the bus when you leave.
Be courteous to other fellow passengers on the bus and the bus driver. The day is always better when you smile.
Help look after the safety of younger bus riders and be a good role model to other bus riders.
Do not ask the driver to stop at places other than your normal stop. The driver is not allowed to do this without prior approval from a proper school official. Also, always bring a note signed by your parent or guardian if you need to get off at someone else’s stop. The note cannot come from the parent of the student you are going home with.
Students under the age of 12 will only be released from the school bus when a sibling or care provider over the age of 12 is with the student or there to receive the student(s) from the bus. This is to avoid child endangerment.
No food or drink is allowed on the busses except on after school extra-curricular trips. During daytime field trips eating or drinking on a school bus is not allowed.
Students beyond the fourth grade are not to sit with students of the opposite gender that are beyond the fourth grade.
During the course of the school year, most all students are passengers on a school bus for field trips, transportation to school, athletic contests, etc. Safety is our primary concern where students are passengers on Schuyler-Industry school busses. There are three major factors involved in the safe transportation of students.
- 1. Selection and training of drivers
- 2. Constant mechanical inspection, preventive maintenance, and repair of our school busses
- 3. Appropriate student behavior
The absence of any of these factors is a safety concern. The Transportation System of Schuyler-Industry Schools complies with all testing, training, and recertification standards as set forth by the Federal Motor Vehicle Standards, Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Illinois Secretary of State. Busses are inspected daily to insure safe mechanical operation. The third aspect of safe transportation is that of appropriate student behavior, this is where the students and their parents get involved. It takes cooperation of everyone involved to maintain satisfactory behavior on our school busses.
We would likes parents to discuss the following behavior infractions with their student(s), regardless of age. These misbehaviors prevent safe school bus operation and cannot be tolerated.
Failure to remain seated
Throwing of objects on bus
Failure to sit in assigned seat
Hanging out of windows
Refusing to obey the driver
Spitting on/in bus
Fighting/pushing/tripping
Profanity/bad language
Threatening language
Sexual Harassment
Unnecessary noise
Eating/drinking on bus
Creating fire hazards
Use of tobacco products
Improper exiting of school bus
Running on bus
Throwing objects out of bus
Vandalism
Public display of affection
Endangering others
Lowering a window below the stop line
Violation of the above bus riding rules can/will result in suspension/expulsion of privilege to ride a school bus.
Our goal is to educate the students of Schuyler-Industry and that may involve transporting them to school on a school bus. We do not want to deny their privilege to ride to school on a school bus. However, when the behavior of a student(s) endangers the safety of the other students on a bus, bus-riding privileges must be denied to insure the safety of others. This may pose a hardship on the parents. That is why we ask that you help us with instructing your students of proper bus riding procedures. Our major concern is the personal safety and well being of our students. As partners in this endeavor, we can succeed. Thank you for your support in the safety of student transportation.
