Class Objectives
1. To develop problem-solving skills that emphasize a creative solution.
2. To gain a general awareness of and appreciation for the visual arts through studies in the following areas: art elements, composition (principles of design), drawing, painting, design, commercial art, sculpture, printmaking, and art history.
Art Room Rules:
1. Be kind. Don’t be dumb.
2. Each day, bring a pencil and your laptop.
3. Be in your seat when the bell rings so attendance may be taken.
4. No cell phones in class – end of story.
5. Foul language and crude humor are absolutely not tolerated in this classroom.
6. If you don’t understand something, please ask for help.
7. Work on assignments the entire period unless otherwise instructed.
8. Enjoy yourself, but not at the expense of others.
9. Keep your hands to yourself.
10. No name means no grade. Write your name on everything.
11. Late assignments will be given partial credit when turned in within two days after the assigned due date. After two days, no credit will be given.
12. Keep track of your grades, you are the one responsible for them.
And the most important rule of all…
Use your brain, art is a thinking activity!!
RIHS Art Department Grading
All grades are posted online.
Each project assignment is evaluated using a written assessment known as a rubric. This is a helpful tool that allows teachers and students to evaluate the degree of a student's learning and skill development.
Just a note: your level of effort or lack thereof, has a tremendous impact on the grades you earn.
Quarter Grade: Art I and Art II.
80% - Studio Work (project assignments)
20% - Class Work (quizzes, handouts, sketchbook, etc.)
Quarter Grade: Advanced Classes – Drawing, Painting, 3-D Design/Sculpture, and Printmaking
85% - Studio Work (project assignments)
15% - Paper Work (weekly sketchbook assignments, writing/reflections, etc.)
Semester Grades: All Classes
Each Quarter is worth 50%
Example: 1st Quarter: 85% (B) @ 50% = 42.5
2nd Quarter: 90% (A) @50% = 45
Semester Grade: 42.5+45 = 87.5% (B)
Grading Scale
100 - 90 = A
89 - 80 = B
79 - 70 = C
69 - 60 = D
59 and below = F
