Here at ICB, we are so excited about our collaboration with Women in Ocean Science!
Integrative and Comparative Biology (ICB), formerly American Zoologist, is one of the most highly respected and cited journals in the field of organismal biology.
ICB publishes works of original research, reviews, and perspectives.
WOS authors publishing their article in ICB are entitled to 12-15 free-to-publish pages (roughly 600 to 700 words per page) upon acceptance.
ICB is a subscription model journal, and all articles are free to read online between one and five years after publication. Some special issues and articles are free to read upon publication.
For further details see: https://academic.oup.com/icb
Peer Review & our process:
ICB garners one of the author's recommended reviewers then at least 1-2 other reviewers chosen by the assistant editor over the manuscript. Once reviews are in, Assistant Editors make a a recommendation to the Associate Editor who then writes the revision decision letter so the paper can go into revision.
An author response & tracked revision is then uploaded 2-3 weeks after the revision letter is received. Depending on the in depth nature of the revision, it may go back for re review then the Assistant Ed and Associate Ed will look it over again before a final decision is made.
Initial submission. We are happy to announce that there are two submission periods of, Oct 1 2025 through Apr 1 2026 for the 2026 year or Oct 1 2026 through Apr 1 2027 for the 2027 year. Stay tuned for more details on deadlines.
Developing your manuscript. You voted for the following workshops, each is open for a month starting August 4 or 11:
scientific publishing (August 4)
create a narrative (August 4)
data visualization (August 11)
Discussion section (August 11)
All workshops are web based and asynchronous, so people from many time zones can participate. For more info and to access the courses, click here for WOS course webpage.
To facilitate peer feedback, we invite authors to share their manuscript drafts with other authors participating in this special issue.

ICB accepts many types of articles. Find out more about some of our article formats under the tab Article types.
ICB publishes original research, reviews, perspectives, and is always open to exploring new ways to uplift scholarly voices.
Our most recently introduced format is the Vignette article, a new format that is well suited to share multiple perspectives and to report out from workshops, town halls, and panels.
