Mission of SISD Libraries

The mission of the SISD Library Media Services Program is to builds a community of learners who are effective users of information and ideas. Each day, we strive to fulfill this mission by providing our students with open access to all of our library services in a safe, supportive and flexible environment. In doing so, we hope to offer a program that fosters a love of reading and a life-long appreciation of learning.

Beliefs

Librarians of Shepherd ISD believe that:

collaboration between the library and school community promotes student achievement
open access to library services and resources is essential
school libraries, librarians and library staff positively impact literacy and life-long learning
libraries support intellectual freedom

Goals

Our libraries will be essential, safe, and inviting centers for teaching and learning.
Our students will develop skills and show progress in their learning of information literacy skills.
Our students will be allowed to enjoy opportunities of discovery, fostering their independent choice of reading and information in a variety of formats.
Our library staff will apply the most proficient professional knowledge and skills to teaching, leading, and guiding our students.
Our teaching staff will be supported collaboratively, by the librarian, to achieve both library and classroom instructional goals.
Our library staff will facilitate curriculum based library lessons and programs that meet the overall Shepherd ISD mission.

Texas school libraries are essential interactive collaborative learning environments, ever evolving to provide equitable physical and virtual access to ideas, information, and learning tools for the entire school community.

Mission of Texas School Libraries

Certified librarians and trained staff nurture a culture of literacy and inquiry throughout the school community. An integral part of instructional teams, librarians are teachers who collaborate with teachers on curriculum design and delivery. They maintain a professionally developed collection of print and digital materials and assist learners in locating resources that match their academic and personal interests. Librarians model and teach information literacy and digital citizenship, empowering learners to make ethical, informed choices in an increasingly complex and evolving global environment.
