This is an in-person event and subject to Covid-19 restrictions
Alan Turing's achievements stretch far beyond his reputation as a codebreaker and computer scientist into mathematical biology. In his final years Turing greatly advanced the use of mathematics in understanding the natural world and his theories of morphogenesis, are still used in research today.
This one-day event aims to bring together and promote the achievements of researchers using Turing's theories of pattern formation and Turing experts. Talks will be accessible for a general scientific audience.
Four invited talks and five contributed talks are scheduled, with plenty of breaks.
The day will last from 10.00am - 4.45pm with an optional drinks event afterwards. The current schedule can be seen here and our invited speakers are listed below.
The event will be held in the University of Sheffield's main celebration venue, Firth Hall
Introductions will be led by Dr Natasha Ellison
The following speakers have been invited for 40 minutes sessions with time for questions
We have five slots for 10 minute talks by researchers working in the broad area of mathematical patterns in biology.
As the event will be a mixture of both academic and non-academics we'd suggest that you plan your talk to be accessible to a wider scientific audience.
Submissions for talks are now closed
Please also register below when applying for a talk or poster.
We welcome scientists at all academic levels that are interested in the broad area of mathematical biology and a wider audience that may be interested in Turing's theory of pattern formation.
Registration is now closed
Please contact us as soon as possible if you are no longer able to attend the day.
This event is part of the celebrations of the Turing Pattern Project - a nationwide initiative to engage primary school students with Turing 's Theory of patterns in nature.
All sessions including lunch and breaks will be held in Firth Hall in Firth Court, our Grade II listed Edwardian red-brick building.
Firth Court is around a 30 minute walk from Sheffield train station or a short tram ride. Alternatively there are taxis available outside the station and various bus routes to the University.
Address:
Firth Court, Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TN, United Kingdom
