Will is a PhD researcher based in the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield. He is supervised by Professor Brant Walkley and is a member of Sustainable Materials at Sheffield research group. He joined the group in September 2023 and his PhD is funded by the Engineering and Sciences Research Council. He is also a Grantham Scholar.
He obtained his degree in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield, and completed his masters at the University of New Mexico, where he wrote his dissertation on ligand to ligand charge transfers and photodecay mechanisms in photoluminescent transition metal complexes.
His PhD is focused on the development and understanding of the chemistry and engineering low carbon alkali activated cements, with the ultimate goal of his research being to optimise cement formulations for enhanced sustainability, performance and durability. Specifically, he looks at the alkali activation of GGBS and EAF slag systems, and is particularly interested in observing the development of these cements using a range of traditional and novel spectroscopic techniques, including insitu DRIFTS, XRD and MAS NMR.
