Up to £50,000 per year for up two years to cover salary, running costs, and items of essential equipment to develop research that underpins supported housing and care delivery or that effectively crosses boundaries between organisations, services and professions. Abbeyfield Research Foundation – closing date 01.11.19.
Aims to stimulate private investment in business-led research and development, to grow and bring to market ideas for healthy ageing products and services that have potential to be adopted on a wide scale. A total of £29 million in government grants together with matched funding from private investors will be available over the next four years for projects up to £1.5 million. Transforming UK Construction: Demonstrator Projects (Smart Cities)
Demonstrators are the application of approaches, deployed at scale, that to improve all aspects of a built assets lifecycle. These will include: validations of new business models, digital approaches to design, construction and management, advancements in modern methods of construction (MMC), approaches to whole-life performance of a building or assets.
The result will be demonstrator projects that improve on the current state-of-the-art in construction, while still demonstrating practical and close-to-market solutions. Innovate UK – closing date 06.11.19.
Primary research in the humanities and social sciences. Grants, worth between £500 and £10,000, are tenable for between one month and two years. British Academy/Leverhulme – 06.11.19.
Exploitation of environmental and other data to create innovative digital services that deliver economic, societal and environmental benefits. Funding consists of strategic research and innovation programme investment of up to £5 million and capital investment of up to £3 million over five years, plus environmental data service costs of up to £400,000 per year. Flexible Grants for Small Groups Competition
Enabling independent-minded researchers to explore and present original research ideas that take new approaches, and to suggest new solutions to real world social problems. Grants are worth up to £5,000. (Independent Social Research Foundation – closing date 08/11/19)
Citizen Science Exploration Grant
Up to £20,000 (100% fEC) to allow researchers to develop pilot projects to build citizen science capacity into their work. Focus on Digital Innovation and User Community Involvement. UKRI – closing date 12.11.19.
Digital Innovation for Development in Africa (DIDA)
Impact and application of digital technologies for development in Africa. UKRI/GCRF – closing date 12.11.19.

Future Manufacturing Research Hubs – feasibility studies
This supports a number of feasibility studies that address novel research in manufacturing technologies as the primary mechanism for new academic collaborations to engage with the hubs. The total budget is £1 million to support grants worth up to £50,000 each over a maximum of six months. EPSRC – closing date 15.11.19.
Annual Research for Social Care call
This supports research on adult social care that demonstrates strong links to people with social care needs, to social care service users and carers and to organisations that provide adult social care services. Grants are worth up to £350,000 each. Department of Health and Social Care including NIHR – closing date 20.11.19.
Five-year, £5 million, programme to increase safety in the design, management and governance of complex systems. Focus on: infrastructure, food and water supply, healthcare, housing, transportation and communication. Royal Academy of Engineering – closing date 21.10.19.
Invitation to Tender: Foresight Review
From £100,000 to £150,000 to produce a framework to support a common way to communicate about the safety of complex systems across sectors and between different levels of expertise globally. Royal Academy of Engineering – closing date 21.10.19.
Aim to stimulate new ideas from a wide range of businesses and social enterprises to develop and deliver products, services and business models at a large scale to support people as they age. ISCR/UKIR – closing date 27.11.19.
Open Call for Value Chain Oriented and Interdisciplinary Technology Transfer Experiments
Open call for value chain oriented and interdisciplinary technology transfer experiments. This supports technology transfer experiments that connect SMEs, mid-cap companies and large industry with international academics, resulting in low-risk industrial adoption of novel computing technologies in the areas of customised low-energy computing, cyber-physical systems and the internet of things. Grants are worth between €50,000 and €100,000 each, over between 10 and 12 months. TETRAMAX – closing date 30.11.19.

Modernising Energy Data Access and Information (phase 1)
This supports projects that will accelerate the development of tools and processes to modernise data services for the energy sector. The total budget for phase 1 is £480,000 to fund up to three projects with total eligible costs of between £100,000 and £160,000 each over up to six weeks. Innovate UK – closing date 01.01.20.
Business basics 3 – SME technology use
This supports trials which test different approaches to encouraging micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to adopt existing technologies. Grants are worth up to £400,000 each. Innovate UK – closing date 04.12.19.
Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centres (Institute for IoT)
The UK has potential to grow and prosper sustainably by transitioning to a more circular economy, where resources are processed with sustainability, waste minimisation and efficiency in mind, and where product lifecycles are optimised to generate more economic and social value before recycling and/or reuse.
However, this transition requires clear, evidence-based, implementation pathways, with broad underpinning research evidence. It must provide not only technical, technological and scientific advances, but also the social, behavioural, cultural, ethical, environmental, economic, legal and regulatory understanding required to support a successful transition.
These Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centres will conduct interdisciplinary research that accelerates understanding and solutions to enable circularity of a resource flow (materials, material systems, products and/or services), including consideration of (multi-) sector contexts. SME Evaluation of Medical Tech (Health and Wellbeing)
£250,000 to support the evaluation of innovative medical devices, diagnostics and regulated digital health products in a real world clinical setting. Innovate UK – closing date 11.12.19.
Adolescence, Mental Health and the Developing Mind – Engagement Awards
These aim to build and strengthen a cross-disciplinary community in the research area of adolescence, mental health and the developing mind. The total budget is £1.6 million to support awards worth up to £100,000 each at 80 per cent of full economic costs over up to one year. MRC, AHRC, ESRC – closing date 17.12.19.
Programme Development Grants – Competition 26
These support applicants in the preparatory work required for a full programme grant for applied research. Grants are worth between £20,000 and £100,000 each over six to 18 months. NIHR – closing date 18.12.19.

Collaborative Awards in Humanities and Social Science
These support teams who are tackling major health-related questions in the humanities and social sciences that require a collaborative approach. Awards are worth up to £1.5 million for between three and five years. Wellcome Trust, GB – closing date 07.01.20.
These support disruptive research and development innovations in any area of technology with a potential to make a significant impact on the UK economy. Total eligible project costs may be between £25,000 and £3 million for projects with durations of between six and 36 months. Innovate UK – 08.01.20.
Health Inequalities Research Initiative: Call 3
This programme supports health inequalities research to support policy makers in the Department of Health and Social Care. Grants are typically worth between £250,000 and £750,000 each for up to three years. NIHR – closing date 14.01.20.
Sponsorship for the 2020 Summer Institute of the Health and Medical Humanities Network
The Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes supports graduates in attending the summer institute to investigate how space, place and design might interplay with individualised and compassionate healthcare, to be held in Denmark (25–27 June 2020). Better Health and Care, Economic Growth and Sustainable Health Systems
Decision support tools for healthcare practitioners can promote uptake of personalised medicine in health care. There is a need to develop and validate decision tools that would integrate available and/or emerging diagnostic means for the area concerned, enabling increased precision of diagnostics and clinical decision making.
On-going progress in the fields of bioinformatics and biostatistics, advanced analytical tools (eg machine learning) up to artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, should make possible the development of devices, platforms or novel approaches leading to highly personalised diagnosis, based on the integration of data available from various sources.
The ultimate result would be a detailed health status assessment from a multitude of viewpoints, in a systemic way and easy to use for clinical purposes. European Commission H2020, check eligibility status beyond October 31 2019 – closing date 01.02.20.
Technological innovation has triggered an unprecedented increase in data production in health research and healthcare. The need to make EU health research data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable) becomes more pressing than ever before. The proposal is expected to build a community (ie, a wider forum) in order to align strategies and capitalise on the work done by relevant European and international initiatives. The proposal should develop two use cases where all the aforementioned aspects will be integrated and analysed. Proposals should focus on:
Methods to generate clinical data both within the context of a clinical investigation and in daily practice (ie real-world data) so that robust clinical evidence is available for high-risk medical devices.
Aggregation methods that will allow to make optimal use of all available data taking into account its heterogeneity (eg meta-analysis methods using different statistical approaches, methods to combine data from different types of sources).
Promote exchange of best-practices and support network activities among developers.

Internet of Food Things Network Plus
The Internet of Food Things Network Plus was set up by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to stimulate and coordinate inter-disciplinary research into the digital transformation of the food production and supply chain. Applications are now invited (up to £40,000 total funding) for short‐term pilot research studies of up to six months duration to test new ideas or create novel linkages between research areas. Healthy Ageing through Digital Solutions and Ecosystems
The call aims to support innovative, transnational and multi-disciplinary collaborative projects within the Active Assisted Living (AAL) domain that promote a life course approach to health and well-being and is open to developing new ICT products, associated services and their final implementation, targeting any application area within the domain.
The proposed solutions need to be embedded into the strategies of the participating end-user organisations, service providers and business partners. Providers and payers have a critical role in shaping useful and attractive AAL solutions with a high market potential as well as in fostering and strengthening ecosystems supporting healthy ageing. Chairs in Emerging Technologies
£2.7 million to identify global research visionaries who will lead major research, translation and innovation programmes around key emerging technologies, to facilitate technology commercialisation. Royal Academy of Engineering – annual call.
Supporting ambitious, interdisciplinary projects that address key issues affecting UK society and shaping the public policy agenda over the next decade. Seed corn funding is available. The total budget is £15 million to support grants worth between £1 million and £3 million. Nuffield Foundation – ongoing for two years.
For the development of a transformative point-of care diagnostic test to revolutionise the delivery of global healthcare and conserve antibiotics for future generations. The prize is worth £8 million, with £2 million available to support promising entries. NESTA/Innovate UK – closing date N/A.
