Welcome (or welcome back to) Sheffield! Here is your first monthly opportunity round up of the year, showcasing the most relevant on-campus, virtual and external employability events as well as job opportunities from employers who lead the way for equality and diversity in their workplaces.
The Apprentice Challenge 2025 (ran by Emerge) | 2nd - 12th October 💸
Emerge has launched a brand new enterprise challenge that puts your skills to the test, they are looking for the next generation of founders who can turn a small investment into big profits. Participating students will be given £10 and have ten days to make that initial investment as profitable as possible. Emerge are looking for students with a creative mindset, a willingness to work hard, and a small team or solo ambition.
You Keep the Profits! Any money you make is yours to keep.
A Place on the Founder Pathway: One person from the winning team will be offered a coveted spot on the exclusive Founder Pathway programme, fast-tracking your journey to becoming a real entrepreneur.
Best Journal Prize: Emerge are not just looking for profits. The team with the best journal documenting their journey (think video diaries or daily social posts) will win a special prize.
Mid-Point Support: Connect with entrepreneurs from across the University community and form a new network of like-minded students.
Workshop | Using Generative AI in Applications | 6th October, 15:30 - 16:30 | The Diamond, Work Room 1 🤖
This session will help you understand the potential benefits and limitations of using AI for tasks like CV writing and cover letter drafting, learn how to use AI to enhance your applications while maintaining your own voice, and gain insights into pitfalls of relying heavily on AI in your job search. You will also discover AI tools specifically designed for career development such as job search platforms and interview preparation resources.
Part-time Jobs and Volunteering Fair | 8th October | 12:00 - 15:00 | The Octagon 👔
Maximise your spare time and enhance your employability with part-time work or volunteering whilst you study! Whether you want to earn some extra cash or give back to your local community, at this fair you can meet a range of employers and charitable organisations who are looking to connect with Sheffield students.
You are guaranteed to find something that interests you, fits with your study timetable, and makes your time at university worthwhile. The fair will be hosted by:
University of Sheffield Careers & Employability Service
We expect this to be a busy event - a quiet room is available in the Council Chamber for anyone who needs to take a break from the fair. For a quieter, less busy experience overall, we'd recommend attending between 2pm- 3pm when footfall for these types of events tends to be lighter.
Workshop | Applying for Placements: When? Where? How? | 15th October | 14:00 - 15:00 | Cornerstone, The Wave LT2 📚
SUMS and all Social Science students, take this fantastic opportunity to learn when and where you can apply for Placement Years and how to make sure that your applications have the best chance of success!
There will be insights and tips from our Social Science students who have just returned from their own exciting Placement Years, alongside Employability team members, who will be on hand to give advice and signpost the support and resources that are available to help you secure your ideal placement!🎉
Autumn Careers Fair | 21st- 23rd October | 12:00 - 15:00 | The Octagon 🍁
Join the biggest Careers Fair of the year to meet over 150 employers, discover your options, and find your next job opportunity!
Days 1 and 2: jobs in the Science, Tech, and Engineering sectors, including jobs in Management, Marketing, HR, and more.
Day 3: jobs in a variety of sectors including education, law, public sector, consulting, healthcare, finance, and more!
Different employers are attending each day and looking to recruit for internships, placement years and graduate jobs

Are you interested in pursuing a career in pharmaceuticals, biotech or health? Then, join Coach Café, a virtual networking opportunity where you can connect with Sheffield graduates who are currently working in these respected fields. Our Alumni Coaches want to share their career insights with you! At these sessions you will:
Take part in small group discussions with different alumni. Hear about their career journeys, get tips for success and get your questions answered.
Finish with an informal online networking session where you’ll have the opportunity to talk to all of the alumni and your fellow students.
Make connections and build your global network.
