Elon Bot

By Anton VoronovApril 11, 2022

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk announced a prototype for a humanoid robot during its ‘AI Day’ event on August 19, 2021. This bizarre creation seems to be one of those typical ‘cool to have but will never happen due to technical limitations’ type of products, however, the CEO has said they plan on creating a functional prototype by the end of this year. Also known as “Optimus”, the Tesla Robot will be designed to complete “dangerous, repetitive, and boring tasks,” however it is under debate why this robot has a humanoid form. For example, conventional machinery that is used to assemble cars, for example, is specifically designed in a way that allows it to both maximize productivity and minimize the cost and space being used. If this robot takes on a humanoid form, many of the technologies that it will be built in would be wasted if the robot is used for a certain purpose. Overall we shall see what this robot will have in store for us once we get more details about the specifications and use cases for this interesting piece of technology.

2022 Senior Advice

By Nathaniel WatermanMay 2, 2022

As the library’s chatter bubbled around us, I sat down with some senior Help Deskers and listened to their memories and advice.

First, they all agreed on an essential piece of advice: find activities that are both enjoyable and productive. These are abundant at the Help Desk, so try out different projects until you find something that works for you. You could always just explore what you’re interested in, and find a way to convert it into something useful.

Also, be sure to communicate — even if you’re working alone, find people to discuss with and ask for help. By chatting with others about what you and they are doing, you’ll help everyone involved think of new ideas while building relationships and a sense of community.

One person claimed that by forcing you to do things quickly, procrastination helps you work more efficiently. Perhaps take that with a grain of salt.

Another would like to remind you to respect your Help Desk privileges — use them, but don’t abuse them.

Finally, don’t work too hard. The Help Desk should be a fun learning experience, so don’t be afraid to scale back a bit for the sake of your enjoyment and well-being.
