Volleyball Teams Finish Season With Record

Varsity made it further in competition than any other Volleyball team in Edgewood history

Despite challenges due to COVID-19, our volleyball players still crushed their season! Both JV and V have done an excellent job!

Our JV team has worked very hard this season, finishing off with a 6-3 record. Reese Brandt, 8, believes that a big part of the amazing victories was the girls all being super close and friendly.

“Playing with them made moving around the court and communicating with each other extremely simple. Playing with a team that I became close with was a giant help,” said Brandt.

After some time unable to play due to the pandemic, the girls were able to quickly get back into the game as a team. The JV team had clean 2-0 wins against Melbourne Central Catholic, Cocoa, and our biggest rival, West Shore.

Our Varsity volleyball team made it very far into competition this year- they got to regional semi-finals, which is the furthest any Edgewood team has ever gone. But after playing their best against Holy Trinity, they sadly had a loss, the score being 22-25, 25-13, 28-30, 23-25. They had an amazing season with a record of 13-4! Just like the JV team, the girls felt that their tight bond helped them to coordinate and work together on the court.

“Probably my favorite thing about the team is just how close we are," said Sarah Watson, 11. Mayghan Lee, 10, also feels that the team's close bond was key to their victories.

"We’re all such good friends even outside of volleyball and getting to play with them is just really great,” said Lee. “In the past I’ve played with people who never really had much of a love for the sport or any motivation to play, but that was never a problem on this team. Every single person who played was there because they wanted to be, which really helps everyone’s enthusiasm on the court and helps us all to be confident in our playing.”

Lee also says the practices help them be better players, both by making them work hard and by making it possible to get even closer with the team.

“I like a lot of the drills we do, because they’re effective for us to improve our playing, but most of them are super fun. And sometimes our managers will jump in and play with us which is always super funny," said Lee. "It’s also great to be able to have something active to do right after a long school day.”

Bella Schwantz, 8, was new on the team this year. But although she was newer to the team, she still felt the team welcomed her in and she was able to form a tight bond with her fellow players.

“Some things I love about the team is probably how much fun we have on and off the court and how fun they make playing volleyball. I think everyone is very close on the team, this really helps on the court with communication and not being scared to give your full effort,” said Schwantz.

Both the JV and V volleyball teams had amazing seasons this year. They have a lot to be proud of. Varsity has made it further in competition this year than Edgewood has ever seen in a volleyball team, and next season, the team is sure to be even greater.
